Brown Univ. student – It’s time to go colorblind
Alex Drechsler at Brown University confronts the dilemma of discriminating on the basis of race in order to remedy discrimination on the basis of race.
There was a time when judging someone based on the content of his or her character, not skin color, was the goal, but that changed along the way:
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to hear again a case on race-based affirmative action, perhaps it is time for us as students to reconsider the efficacy of this widespread policy beyond its constitutionality….
Yet what is important, and where proponents and opponents of affirmative action diverge, is the conflation between poverty and race. Of course, it is clear that not all minorities are poor and that not all poor people are minorities. Yet race-based affirmative action flies in the face of this logic. The statement made by a policy of race-based affirmative action is that every member of a minority group is inherentlyprone to poverty — that somehow, solely because you were born with a certain skin color, we must treat you differently. This policy appears almost archaic in that it indicates that every individual of a minority group is innately different because of his or her race or skin color.
Brown University’s admissions office must move beyond racial divisions.

Nice catch, Roscoe. The fact that this is a “brown” student makes his/her argument completely specious – obviously “brown” students have no concept of what is good for them, and must be ordered about by white liberal intelligensia who know what it is to be brown in America better than anyone actually brown in America would know.

Alex…dude…you ought to keep your epiphanies to yourself. In the ’90′s, that kind of loose talk would have gotten you run off the campus, or worse. Nowadays, you get the option of sensitivity and diversity reeducation classes, but “Racist” still goes on your permanent record. And I’d keep my car at an undisclosed off-campus location for a while if I were you.

You have to read and re-read carefully the propaganda spewed from these young communist intellectuals:
“Specifically, I propose that race-based affirmative action be replaced entirely with a socioeconomic status-based affirmative action system that awards any applicant who has had difficulties and obstacles such as those mentioned earlier. Thus, this system will provide a more just advantage to the disadvantaged.”
In other words, if you are poor and from the ghetto–no matter what color, you’re in.
“Let us stand for equality, break down the barriers erected between races, and treat each individual with colorblind lenses by assessing exclusively their merits and personal character.”
Merits and personal character used as a smoke screen: “He’s black and poor, and he’s a nice boy with lousy grades who dropped out of HS and who really really tried hard to score well on his GED. He doesn’t rob gas stations anymore and he’s drug free now. Let him in!”
It’s the same shit, only now you double the opportunity for “minorities” with RACE AND POVERTY criteria.
