Candidate compares rape pregnancy to ‘out-of-wedlock’ baby

Tom Smith, a Republican who’s battling incumbent Democrat Bob Casey for U.S. Senate spot, backed himself into a rhetorical mess today — all while trying to distance himself from fellow Republican Todd Akin’s toxic comments on “legitimate rape” and unintended pregnancy. After affirming that he was “pro-life, period — no exceptions,” Smith was asked to detail how he’d justify his position to a daughter “who God forbid would be the victim of a rape.” Smith responded by comparing that situation to one he said he’d faced: a relative “having a baby out of wedlock.” Unsurprisingly, partisans have pounced. Rape does not justify murder. If one is pro-life then the position that there should be NO exception is the most intellectually consistent. Remove the emotion from the debate and focus on the reasoning. I believe that a child is a child from the moment of conception so how could I possibly justify the intentional murder of that child? The child’s humanity isn’t dependent upon the conditions that brought about the conception. It is an objective fact.

    So for anyone to claim to be pro-life and to be in favor of exceptions is to hold two contradictory beliefs as both being true. That’s crazy. Literally. Or dishonest for political reasons.

    In the case of most politicians that claim to be pro-life yet favor exceptions I believe that they don’t truly believe that life begins at conception. It’s that or they are willing to sanction murder to advance their political ambitions.

    Or they’re not smart enough to understand that the position they advance is intellectually untenable.

    Regardless, Republicans need to stop walking into this trap. Congress has nothing to do with the abortion issue at this point. Stop saying stupid shit.

    There’s a lot riding on a GOP Senate, and the MSM is going to keep using this issue to weaken Republican candidates. They need to start saying, “I support the GOP plank. If you don’t understand that position, look it up. Next subject.”

    I beginning to think that some democrats have a point. These guys must be really sick or really stupid to have all these idiot notions running around their head about rape, what it is and what it isn’t.

    Of course, at least they’re not leaving women they were cheating on their wives with to die in four feet of water after drunkenly driving them into a bay.

    @Tom

    Playing logic games and “removing emotion from the debate” is straight out of the liberal handbook and shows a troubling lack of compassion. Denying rape victims options and trying to trump their personal beliefs with your own is not going to help them or the GOP; in fact, you’re aiding and abetting the liberals by giving them ammo.

    But keep on promoting that position – we don’t really need the fucking Senate anyway, do we?

    @MNHawk

    Your and my vote are not the point. Women of reproductive age are the target demo. They supported Barry in droves in ’08, and many are considering flipping to Romney; this is the media’s way of scaring them back to the liberal fold.

    All politicians have foot-in-mouth disease.
    DemocRATs don’t get wide coverage, that’s all.

    All you Republican male politicians SHUT UP!! You cannot compare rape to anything but a violent violent act against women. There is no such thing as legitimate rape and it does not compare to out of wedlock pregnancies. SHUT UP and listen to Xavier’s advise. The traps are set and are being sprung one by one.
