I checked out the longer trailer at nbc.com and I’m disappointed. It’s going to be a long boring series about 15 years AFTER the EMP attack. Sigh, another post-apocalyptic show.
I was expecting a movie about the EMP attack. Now that would be something I’d watch.

First off, an EMP will wipe out nearly everything — not everything. And it has to be on for it to get damaged. If your computer is off and disconnected (like a laptop or a tablet) it won’t be affected. If you have a backup power source, it’s okay. So are any lightbulbs that are just sitting on the shelf.
Would life become rather “rustic?” You betcha. But that just means that everyone would move close to any available power source. Cities would spring up around power plants and hydro-electric dams. And who do you think would be the first to demand power be sent to them? Yep! City-dwelling libtards. And if someone gets a nuclear plant back on-line, wanna bet the first people they sacrifice to the new god of nuclear power are the koolaidians that say nuclear power is bad?

Wonder if they’re going to write falling temps and lower Co2 as a result of a ‘Happy Gaia’ into the plot? Anything to advance the libtard cause.

@Sonoma – electronics don’t have to be on to be affected. The pulse induces a large current in the circuitry….destroying all the sensitive teeny weeny stuff like pretty much all computers.
Magnetism induces electrical current in a conductor….and electric current in a conductor generates a magnetic field. Can’t have one without the other.

Wait so the EMP takes out the lift caused by the surface of the plane’s wings? WTF.
I love how all of the car headlights sound like stadium lights being turned off.
DRAMATIC NOISES! All lights and computers make beeps and boops and buzzes! Don’t you know??

Planes and cars are very dependent on electronics. Fuel injection, electronic ignition, etc. A plane without fuel for thrust quickly attains the flying characteristics of a brick in midair.

*small planes that can glide may be exceptions depending on how their control surfaces are operated.

More Gaia propaganda. First Avatar now Revolution.
Mother Nature/Earth knows best. Leave it to the writers at NBC to conjure up an anti-militia flick. That’s what it’s really probably about. EMP attack, everyone loses, then all band together (like good commune freaks (Hippie/communist)to ward of the evil militia (conservative/Tea-Party type, etc.). And the battle wages on. I’m not sure, but I bet I’m close.

We are all over this at work.
A few things they are not covering in this show.
1 – EMP is a first strike weapon, they don’t cover the 2nd or 3rd wave of war to follow.
No one is going to spend all that money and not follow up with an all out assault. By air first than ground forces if they really hate us.
2 – one weapon will not kill electric in the whole country. The sun is more powerful and it does cause big problems with the grid but it can’t kill everything. Many local events can be expected but not a total kill.
3 – not every thing will be affected, the more antenna it has the more induced voltage will be transferred to the electronics.
4 – and it will not take forever to restore power to some areas more quickly than they show, we are Americans not muslims.
5 – stuff in the immediate area will have large scale effects. No MAC machines, no refrigeration, no alarm systems. No TV, yeah!
Don’t worry, guns will still work.

Also after 15 years there’s no steampunk city? I’m disappointed.

Bravo! I think it’s them Ruskies. We should nuke them NOW, before Obama takes down most of our nuclear arsenal. And that EMP is theory, so claims someone I know. Is there even an existing EMP bomb? Or am I not read on the subject? (in other words, I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about).

@Fotf — In 2005, a series called Commander in Chief began. It was about a woman VP that became prez because the current preezy croaked. It showed (use your best announcer’s voice here) the difficult task facing a nation and how one woman [*cough*hillary*cough*] was able to bring the country together and be the leader that saved the
Republicdemocracy.Hollywood figured that Hillary was the presumtive democrat nominee and wanted to “prime the pump,” so to speak.
I called it commander of cheese.

Good Lord, that’s more depressing than that one with Morgan Freeman as President and the blonde feminist who hated men but loved Daddy (a paradox I think they call it). The one where she and Daddy are wiped out at the end of the flick by the big, huge, colossal tidal wave; later, Mr. Saint President Morgan tells how we lost the East Coast and way up to the Missouri River and how we shall rebuild or something. Oh yeah, it’s call Deep Impact. Politics and movies: propaganda. My interpretation: Freeman, AA Pres and noble black man; blonde egotistical bitch epitomizing the true woman virtuous valor (she’s can doz no wrong!); and finally, Daddy white man with all the real power and money. Same shit, different day.

@sonoma – what good is a computer if the ‘net is down and all you have is a couple of hours of battery?
What good is generator power for a few days without a continuous fuel supply?
The gas stations will dry up in a day. The supermarket shelves will be bare in a day. Pharmacies will be bare in a day. No one is coming to restock. The water system won’t last more than two days. I work for a major water company and we have a plan (not working as of yet) to install 10MW of generator power in our biggest water plant, which will power the minimum amount of water to 2 million customers for 48 hours. After that, 40K of stored fuel runs out. Then what? Can’t truck it in; trucks don’t work.
People in hospitals will die off within a week. Type I diabetes patients won’t last without refrigerated insulin.
I hate to be a Cassandra, but our society is so totally dependent upon the flow electricity. We do not know how to survive without it. The cities will go first. Once food & water stops being delivered people will simply die in the streets. Then there will be roving packs to pick clean what survives in the countryside. They’ll either have to fight or die.
Civilization is a very thin veneer on the base of mankind.

FoF – EMP does exist as a weapon.
Any high altitude nuke detonation will do but there are many smaller cooler devices out there for a more local impact.
The one that fits in a Tomahawk Missile and my fav is the 5 city block lunchbox model, but wait, buy one now and get a second one for half price.

The real doom peddlers will tell you that while a man-made nuke based EMP will mess things up royally the thing you should watch out for is a large CME from the sun that gets pointed at the earth.
THAT is the EMP that will kill every device even if it’s off or even if it’s mil-spec.
That’s the scenario that makes everyone stop, look at the ground and say “yeah…” and let out a big sigh and then say “So, how about them Bears this year, eh?”

LMAO. I need it. Another red letter day for the Bailey’s here. You don’t want to know.
@Chuck
Man, millions would die probably within the first few weeks without electricity. You can only go so many days without water, considering the power plants/filtration facilities being down and all. EMP war = The Road. The Road is the most depressing movie I’ve ever watched, next to Tokyo Finally Kicks Godzilla’s Ass.

@Chuck — I understand. I’m just saying that your data might be safe and usable if and when the power is restored. No net right away, but like @FreeMan said, it won’t take forever; we’re not 11th century muzloids.
However, you are right about civilization and electicity. I suspect that every effort will be made to restore any power generation first.
Actually, this topic was covered well by author James Burke in his series Connections. The first episode is called The Trigger Effect and he goes through what people would do without electricity. It’s not very in-depth but it’s not far off the mark.

One Second After was a horrifying read. @Chuck U, what you are describing would very likely be the result. The two things that impacted me most from the book are:
(1) the cutting off of access to all medication. Diabetics wouldn’t last long without a continuous supply of insulin, but even worse is what the book describes about people who are cut off from their anti-psychotics and other mental health-balancing chemicals. Think about it for a minute.
(2) the swift descent into immorality and feral behavior. When everything we count on and depend on is taken away, some people will be unable to stay “civilized”. Heck, many people don’t act very civilized NOW–think about what they’d be like without power, without a ready supply of food, without the general amenities of present-day life. Chaos and anarchistic behavior would run rampant before any kind of order could be reinstated.

One day in the U.S. without lights and the thieves come running; in Japan during that horrendous tsunami the big news was how civil everyone was. Perhaps we should look into the mechanics of civil behavior. First, we reinstate the Ten Commandments in the schools; then we boot out the lawmakers who insist on telling us that we don’t need God, and then back it up with legislation. God must be laughing if He isn’t weeping at our silliness and stupidity.
