It’s the Potential, Stupid

Home - by - August 18, 2012 - 17:00 America/New_York - 104 Comments

I hate to be a broken record, and no one can claim that I don’t love dogs, but when you keep powerful animals with the ability to end your life you do it at your own peril.

I know, I know, “my dog is a sweetheart, it wouldn’t hurt a fly.”  Dogs get mental illness, as well as physical illnesses,  that can change their personality on a dime. “If” that happens, can you survive an attack?

Atlanta News, Weather, Traffic, and Sports | FOX 5

I’m not saying people should give up their beloved pets at this point, I wouldn’t. But I will never again get a pitbull, or any other dog that I could not beat in a fist fight. Anyone who thinks they can “talk to the animals,” I have news for ya, you can’t.

“[The dogs] never showed any type of aggression, even if one got loose,” neighbor Monica Cofer told Fox 5 TV in Atlanta.

    I like dogs, but…

Years ago my nephew was attacked by their neighbors dog.

It took me exactly 30 seconds to kick it to death.

I’ve had amstaffs and americans my whole life.

Being experienced I can tell you, you can never have 2 males, neutered or unneutered, 1 always will try to be the alpha, the little spats are just signals.
If they didn’t get into in front of me, they would wait until I was gone to challenge each other, and always ended up being vet visits.

You have to establish yourself as the alpha.

and 5 huge male dogs are bad news, dogs are pack animals no matter what you do, they still have a pecking order.

None of mine ever knew the word sigem, bite attack or kill, dogs are teritorial and know who should be in their territory, mine believes everyone who comes to the house is there to see him.

So I only have 1, of which everyone I’ve ever owned was put into the submission against their will on an early age, and with play wrestling get reminded I can still submit them whenever i want.
They definately are fearless dogs and more devoted then most breeds, with proper training and love can be the best dog 1 ever owned.

I think the dog whisperer show put some false illusions into her head about dogs.

Nutjob is correct. I’m a vet in the north Atlanta area, most of the emergencies I see are dog on dog. Canines are pack animals and respect one alpha leader. The human must be that alpha leader and expect skirmishes to break out. Then the true leader must be able to control the situation and be ready to put offenders in the submissive position, or their own personal kennel. Dogs take a huge amount of time and monetary committment. Some people have no business owning or caring for an animal, much less 3 or 4.

Assholes like sarthurk, which is German for asshole, have no concept or idea. Yeah he’s a real tough guy, I bet he tells all his buddies at the bath house how he stomped a dog to death.

My wife and I were walking our dog over a route I would take regularly when I walked the dog alone. There was a pit bull at one house but he was always on a chain leash connected to a metal pole anchored into the ground.

Only this time he wasn’t on the leash. And they were repairing the fences. So the dog ran directly at us as we walked by in the middle of the road. He went straight for my dog. My wife and I grabbed for the pit bull at the same time. I got hold of his collar and forced him to the ground and put a knee into his abdomen. For some reason, he became submissive pretty fast. I think I actually saw terror in the dog’s eyes. Hell, I know I was scared and so was my wife.

The owner ran out and said the typical taurusfimus about how he was a good dog and wouldn’t hurt anyone and he was a baby and yadda-yadda-yadda. The idiot just kept going on even though here we were, in the middle of the street, subduing his dog because it attacked ours!

Sorry, pit bull lovers. They are phookin’ attack machines. And it IS genetic. Just check out this article.

Back when I was 19 or 20 I had a friend that owned a German Sheppard that when I was around always had his ears flat on his back, tail half between his legs, bad body language. One day that dog, displaying the same body language walked up to me and jumped up with his front paws on my chest. I reached down to pet the mutt and as soon as my hand mad contact he made a big old snap at it. My right hand was below his muzzle. I had him by the throat and cranked him up in the air. Left him there for a while until he settled down. Tossed him on the ground, he never came near me again.
That kind of behavior is unusual for a German Shepard. It’s common place with a Pit.

I’ve witnessed some bad things out of Pits, including an x girl friend that still has scars on her face. Her dog to.

Again, Retrievers retrieve, herding dogs herd, flushing dogs flush, Pit Bulls fight. It’s what they where bread for.

By Major General Jerry Curry, USA (Ret.)

The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirms that it is purchasing 174 thousand rounds of hollow point bullets to be delivered to 41 locations in major cities across the U.S. No one has yet said what the purpose of these purchases is, though we are led to believe that they will be used only in an emergency to counteract and control civil unrest. Those against whom the hollow point bullets are to be used — those causing the civil unrest — must be American citizens; since the SSA has never been used overseas to help foreign countries maintain control of their citizens.

What would be the target of these 174, 000 rounds of hollow point bullets? It can’t simply be to control demonstrators or rioters. Hollow point bullets are so lethal that the Geneva Convention does not allow their use on the battle field in time of war. Hollow point bullets don’t just stop or hurt people, they penetrate the body, spread out, fragment and cause maximum damage to the body’s organs. Death often follows.

@Bad Brad — My sister-in-law used to train herding dogs. Whenever any dog would jump up on her she would knee the dog in the chest, firmly but not angrily. She never had to do that twice. She did it to one of my dogs and every time she came over, that dog would stick her tail between her legs and leave the room.

The problem with pit bulls is that they have no sense of anyone being in charge except their owners. They take correction from no one else. And if they snap, even the owner is not safe.

I have no idea why anyone would want a pit bull. It’s like paroling a rapist/murderer next to an all girls’ school.

Yes, It’s true I do post under the name bubba. I’m not sure what that proves other than you don’t know how to spell. But you’ve never seen that screen name here. And by the way, I was serious. I fix animals for a living, and when someone brags about killing all the pitbulls they can find, then it is incumbent on me to make sure that the authorities know about it. Trust me, I have already done just that. Killing animals is nothing to brag about. People like you have something wrong deep within you. Think about what you said. “I kill every pit bull I see” “sic”. As I said on your site, I’ve taken screen shots, and hopefully they can be used to cause an action against you. Boasting about kiling animals is indicative of a twisted mind. It is not something I, nor anyone I know would take pleasure in bragging about. Sorry not buying the “these are killing machines” phobia.
All dogs have the thrill of the chase, or thrill to pursuit, its prevelent when playing fetch, doesn’t mean they are attackers.
I’ve been atacked by a friends malamute, a german shepherd, and chows on a couple of differant occasions, that didn’t show a single sign of aggression. It would be plain ignorant to think all malamutes, shepherds or chows are attackers or that they didn’t want to kill me only because they didn’t have the power.
1 thing everyone of these dogs had in common were they were dogs kept on leashes, which usually means they have or had very little human interreaction.
Does it make the pit on a chain more dangerous with no or little human interreaction? Of course it does, its a powerful dog just like the rot or shepherd on a chain thats suddenly allowed to be set free and let its animal instincts to kick in and pursue.
What most owners fail to comprehend is how powerful they are, and most of all fearless. Everyone I’ve ever owned never showed an ounce of fear, but my boston terriors the same way, it doesn’t have the package to back it up.
The other issue is they are always thinking and need lots of attention and are not a breed that is content with just laying around, they are working dogs, its just idiots took this to another level, theres plenty of people who shouldn’t be allowed a windup toy let alone a dog, just look at all the rescues, dog shelters and rescue shows on tv as proof.
Before the pit, was the rot, the doberman, the shepherd, there always will be a dangerous dog.

Humans glorify it just like everything else, this lady screwed up plain and simple by having a pack of dogs. Nor did it help her being a female and not being able to control the dog or in her case the pack of dogs.

But every dog has the potential for damage, and it is so important to keep that in mind.

Yes they are pack animals and yes they have a pecking order but there is no excuse for out of control behavior. Maybe this is off topic but long ago my older sister and her husband had a spider monkey that was a little bit wild and had the run of the house. One day while at my sister’s place, I was in their kitchen with my little four year old girl and everyone else was at the back of the house admiring some new born kittens. My daughter was standing next to me when the monkey came from ‘nowhere’, jumped on the table and then jumped on my daughter’s chest and screeched as loud as it could, obviously scaring the hell out of her. At that time, I grabbed the little bastard, pulled him off her chest and tossed him across to the other side of the living room. The pesky little POS got up and ran off to parts unknown. My daughter was only scared and not hurt but you don’t come between a father and his daughter and if the little bastard of a monkey had been killed by my reactions, tough shit.

Stranded in Sonoma: One of the conditions for getting homeowners insurance, was we could not own a pit bull or a trampoline. DH has been attacked as well by dogs in his line of profession. He was ambushed by a pig as well on his rounds. We don’t own a pig either.

Some people don’t follow leash laws, I carry a big stick when I’m out for walks. I refuse to become like the young gal in the video. For being a good person, she paid the price.

Go ahead I’m 41, we’ll let the chips fall where they may. But as a veternarian, I am obligated to report abuse. I take that oath seriously.

Literature indicates that most people who abuse animals have serious problems. The indications are too numerous to cite, however a simple google search will confirm that what I say is the truth. So all of you people out there bragging about killing, and or stopming to death a dog or any other domesticated animal, you may wish to give consideration for your thoughts before you brag about your feats.

I made the mistake of deciding to keep a German Shepard/ Wolf dog. The first four years were hell. Bit me three different times. Now he is the best watch dog in the world and he keeps me safe when I camp out under the stars.
You have to learn to speak their language. If you punish them for something they did an hour ago they will think there is something wrong with you and they will not want you to be the alpha. Their memory is not the same as ours. Don’t ever beat a dog — that will create behavior problems.
It took me, not the dog, four years to learn how to communicate.
Never lose alpha status. Don’t let the dog eat before you, walk in front of you, enter a doorway before you, or sit on the furniture or sleep on your bed.

And most important, don’t ever try to raise a wolf. They belong in the wild, like me.

    You’re right, Rubes…

I should have just done one of the following while that dog was trying to kill my nephew:

-Called animal control (and wait for them to arrive).

-Walked over to the neighbor’s house and respectfully request that he come get his dog (neighbor wasn’t home, BTW)

-Reasoned with the dog, threw him a chew toy, or as a last resort, yelled at him to stop.

Before you give me some smart-ass answer, you should know that I tried one of the three above, and this pitbull bit the SHIT outta me also while I tried one of the above options (I’ll let you guess which one)

So lay it on me asshole.

ps: If your dog was attacking a loved one of mine…I’d kick the shit out of it also. Hope that gives you something to think about.

I am looking a my domesticated dog lick it’s nuts as I write this.

The guy who said he stomped a dog to death, said he did so while it was attacking a kid. Anyone who would not do the same has deep seated issues that require medication.

And anyone who would not put down a feral pitbull in a rule area is just as crazy.

I said I didn’t kill a pitbull and it pulled down a kid. I didn’t say I killed it. I said I would kill any stay pitbull I see, in my area. I didn’t say I ever seen one — well except the one that I mentioned that I left alone.

What is sad is I really don’t think you have the mental capacity understand the context of the above text.

Hog hunters cross them with mountain cur and use them for catch dogs. They will let people know if one gets away, and they will tell you that you better kill it if you can get a shot, before they start dragging down cattle or worse.

They are mean enough to grab a 400 lb boar by the face and keep it from running off.

That dog really is good around children if it is raised and treated properly. But you should NEVER leave a small child alone with any kind of dog. When I was about 10 there was this Doberman behind this chainlink fence. Everyday at lunchtime, it was across the street from where my school was, two other guys and me would tease this dog behind the fence.
One day I was by myself, the fence was open on the other end, and the dog bolted for me and he was fast. I was small enough and slid under a parked car.
To my rescue comes an umbrella yielding nun, fender him off till the owner came to take him away. It was probably seconds but felt like hours.

Hummmm… Never have heard of too many boxers
getting radical.. Hear of a lot of irritable
    pit bulls though..
I remember my dad once brought home a Chow back
when I was pretty young. That sum bitch scared the crap out of me. And he’d eat all the clothes
off the lines, and generally try to chew up
    anything he saw.
My dad was the only one that could control it.
He chased the rest of the family around the yard.
Needless to say, it didn’t last too long.
I had a Shepherd once, and it was as calm as could
be unless he thought you were an intruder looking
to cause mayhem, and he’d bare those teeth and
scare the crap out of whoever it was..
But never a problem with anyone that was not a
    threat, even if a stranger.
My recreational living center is in Oklahoma near
Lake Eufaula, and I had a pack of dogs blow
through my place one afternoon while I was
grilling some grub. You could hear the rumble
through the woods. It will make your neck hairs
stand up. I ducked into my car and closed the door. They blew into the clearing, ran around my
big camp oak tree, and blew back into the woods
the same way they came in. At a dead run the whole
trip… Needless to say, I’m usually carrying a
lead spitter when I’m there. I also saw a large
black Jaguar up there in 2007. No joke, and it
was in the daytime, right in front of me, and no doubt at all what it was.
Those things kill by sneaking up on you, and
biting and crushing the skull. But there is so
many deer and other critters, I doubt they would
    mess with a human.
If any of these critters threaten me, I’ll make em
into a rug and won’t lose a minutes sleep over it.
If they don’t mess with me, I won’t mess with them.

    ———————–

Nope.. It was a large black jaguar. No mistake.
All the pictures of them are an exact match to
    what I saw.
Besides, there is really no such thing as a black
cougar, or if there is, it would be an ultra rare
    quirk of nature.

Where as melanistic jaguars are not that uncommon.
Of course, all the “experts” say they don’t exist
in the U.S., but I know what I saw. It could have
been a pet. Thing is, many others claim to see
them, pets have been getting eaten, calves drug up
into trees, etc.. Large black cats with *kittens*
have been spotted both west and north of where my
place is. The area is forest, and perfect habitat
for them. Mountain lions have been picking up too.
I think they are all making a comeback due to
the lack of hunting pressure. Bears are creeping

    Talk about viral!

Its obvious this is a passionate issue on both sides.
Any dog attacking someone needs put down, my point is these dogs need alot of attention and if you don’t have the time don’t get one.
I’ve had hunting beagles, foxhounds and retrievers mostly males and a pack at that and they never would try to kill each other.
They might get into a scrape or 2 but it would always end with 1 submitting.
Which is why I made the comment about 2 males of this breed, they’re very tenacious and won’t give up.

The same dogs that just tried killing each other an hour later would be laying next to each other on the rug licking each others wounds….WTF.

They’re just very tenacious and like the rot or doberman or shepherd some people shouldn’t have a large breed dog, dogs or a pack of them.
Mine will play with any dog that plays with him, but he won’t submit, nor tolerate signs of aggression or threats by other dogs to him.

Let me paint a nice picture for you all.

In my town, my little town of Lebanon Pa.
Every teen to 20+ year old black man feels he ain’t all that without a pitbull. They all seem to have one. It is a status of manhood.

Now when the shit hits the fan, and it is going to be soon, all those dogs are going to be on the street and packing together looking for food.

I don’t want to be that food.

A co-worker, a small lady, has this 2 year old pit who loves to chase cars and bite tires. A security guard drove up next to where she was walking her dog on company property and the dog bit through a 6 ply steel belted radial on an SUV 3 times in a few seconds. The tire was shot.

Since I had to do the followup investigation for our law and insurance departments I have photos of the tire. I was not buying the story up till then. Do you know how much force it takes to puncture a tire, not on the side wall, but on the tread?

My favorite line in the post was “Dogs get mental illness”. That really is true. When I was a kid my next door neighbors had a dachshund who was the meanest little son-of-a-bitch dog I ever met. I dog sat for two weeks for two summers and that dog was frigging crazy. For the first week he would let me in the house to feed him, he’d go out to do his business, then he’d chase me out of the house as I went to leave.

The thing about a dachshund is that they’re small dogs but they have big snouts with huge teeth.

By the first weekend he started liking me, and by the end of the second week he loved me. Then when the owners came back and I saw him in the yard he was back to being the crazy snarling monster.

That dog worshipped the ground my neighbors walked on. But when he was about 18 years old he turned on the wife, who by then was in her 80′s, and the husband was forced to call the city to come get him and he was put down. I saw the neighbor later that day and he was tearing up as he told me what happened but he knew he had done the right thing. That dog lived a very good life for a very long time.

The meanest dogs I’ve ever met have been small breeds. I have a Pomeranian named Fluffy who is now 13 and she’s so high strung I’ll never get another one. Small dogs can be cute but they can also be vicious.

Being male of female doesn’t have anything to do with controling a dog. I have had large dogs all my life including a really really big German shepard who used to stalk kids. Even though he thought of himself as my protecter, And stood guard over every area we where in, as soon as I touched someone he would relax and become friendly and welcoming. Did I trust him, absolutely, I raised him from birth and there was one thing he always understood I was the Boss. He came at me once without thinking, and I had him down so fast he didn’t know what hit him, and, I could see the sadness in his eyes that he had messed up. Did I trust him afterwards, absolutely, because if you loose trust in them, you loose their hearts. I could put a hot dog on the end of any of my dogs noses and they would wait till I said it was okay. I have had a lot of big dogs in my life, and I groomed dogs that had never been groomed and were older than 1 year, including Chows. I always tell people, dogs are like kids if you don’t have them under control by the time they weigh 75 pounds you have a big problem on your hands. This woman clearly loved animals, and it’s a shame she did not understand male dogs. I think it’s a shame the poor dogs had to be put down, because of what is natural for them.

The most vicious dog I ever encountered was a Chihuahua. The little bug eyed rat bastard. Growling, snapping and yapping. Growing up, a neighbor across the street had a Doberman who looked menacing. On occasion it got loose and naturally it scared the shit outta me but mostly because of the bad rep they had back then. So did German Shepards, which the neighbor behind our house had to play with their little boy. She would bark thru the fence at you but was obedient and well mannered if you were next to her. And then there was the only dog that I owned on my own: Frosteetoes. She was a beautiful German Shepard with a black coat and white markings on her toes. Great personality, good natured and loyal. We knew her pedigree when we bought her and knew that she wasn’t inbred or come from a puppy mill. I sure do miss her.

But I digress. I’ve encountered several pitbulls over the years. All were well trained and obedient but there was always something unsettling when being around them. Maybe it’s the reputation that they have or that these ones were so disciplined that there was no personality that came thru.

From what I’ve heard is that a lot of Pitbulls are inbred, for generations. That could be a factor for the psychotic behavior with the breed. Maybe a generation could be bred with gentler disposition type dogs and then breed them again with purebred pitbulls? I’m not a dog breeder so I’m not sure if that would fix the temperament of what ever ails the breed.

For now I have cats. They pick their favorite human and become inseparable, at least my kitty does. :) I’ll get another dog eventually but not while my fur baby is still around. She’s very jealous and doesn’t play well with others.
