Olympic Trivia Question of the Day

Home - by - August 8, 2012 - 17:11 America/New_York - 28 Comments

UPDATE: ANSWERS BELOW -

The decathlon is  a program of ten Olympic events bunched together in order to find the most gifted athlete.

These are the ten events, in the order they take place -

100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m, 110m Hurdles, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, 1500m.

Here’s the question. Without looking it up (google cheaters), in which event is the World Record Decathlon time, distance or height the furthest from the world record for an athlete that specializes in the specific event?

Which event does the world record decathlete come closest to the specialized world record holder?

Answers-

The event with the biggest discrepancy?  DISCUS – the record in the Decathlon is 25% away from the world record holder.

Jurgen Schult of East Germany hurled a discus 74.08 meters.

US Decathlete, Bryan Clay, threw a discus  55.87 meters.

The least differential event?

110 meter hurdles.

World Record – Dayron Robles of Cuba – 12.87 sec

Decathlete record – Ashton Eaton of the USA -  13.35 sec

The 100 meter dash times for some of these decathletes are really outstanding so I’d have to say 100 meter is the closest

Shot put is probably the furthest away because you’d have to be really massive to get close to the record .. and that would cause problems in about 7 other events where you have to be normal sized to do well

    100 meter dash is closest

    1500 meter run is farthest

I only say this because of the order of events.

I’m going to say long jump is the furthest away from the world record holder. (mostly because of the video posted about Bob Beamon)

I’m going to say Javelin is the closest to the real world record holder.

    D’oh!
My answer… ‘javelin or shot put’ was for the closest to the record.
I’d say the 100m for the furthest.

Since most Decathlon champs are white, ergo they can’t jump and can’t run, I’d say either the hurdles or 100m are furthest from world record with more emphasis on the shortest dash, so 100m.

I’ll go pole vault closest. White guys can pole vault. Are we talking %’s?

Like Maudie said, how do you determine if 1 second in the 100m is further from the record than 1 foot is in the pole vault? Do you convert it to %?

    But anyway, closest – 400m; furthest – 100m hurdles.

Funny, Mudjuice, I like your logic too. They are exhausted by the end of the competition. I think that’s why the distance race is last; to truly test their mettle. So the times would really suffer.

I almost picked the 100m as the closest, until Usain Bolt moved the bar.

For furthest away, I’ll have to say one of the throwing events: shot put, discus, javelin. I’ll pick javelin because it’s the 9th discipline and the contestants are probably worn out.

As for the closest, I’ll choose the 110m hurdles (it’s not 100m but 110m for hurdles). Those hurdles will slow down everybody so I think the separation is compressed and closer.

I don’t have a clue about the Olympic record holders, but I do know if a lying, cheating, stealing, etc. decathlon was held, the occupier of the WH would have equal competition with Holder, Pelousy, Reid and the ilk, and they would all have to share the gold.

Is there a site where all the differences are shown? I’d be curious to see how all the sports lined-up and to see how the differences worked out as a percentage of the record.
