    @MaryfromMarin — You hit the nail on the head. The standards for the date are actually from the Catholic religion; we use the Gregorian calander — named for Pope Gregory XIII.

    As for the time, the current time zones were set by those ee-vil robber barons of the railroads during the 19th century. They were so concerned with making ee-vil profit that they setup 4 time zones across the U.S. so the trains would be on time and the people could count on their accuracy. Not to mention that gov’t could now operate more efficiently because of more accurate time across the country.

    So, ee-vil profit motive and religion gave us standard date and time. Libtards are such schmucks.

    Here’s something about all that government electric power statists never consider:

    The Progressives forced public utilities on us a few generations ago. Before that the industry was a vibrant evolving and innovating. Now that the government has a mortal lock on the industry it is frozen in the same system that it was in when they took over. Now the innovation in the industry is in the existing system, like when the telephone company was a monopoly. There’s no competition so there’s no venture capital or people working on building better systems. We’re living with the system of the early 20th century. Basically we’re living with the transportation system that was innovative in the early 20th century but has been frozen in place by government monopoly too.

    All of those things that the Left cites as examples of great government are things that were innovative in the early 20th century back when the Progresses took those things out of the realm of real private enterprise.

    They have stifled us for generations. Our standard of living would be light years ahead of where we are now if they hadn’t come on the scene.

    Progs are the bane of society.

    Let me expand Kevin R’s excellent post a little.

    When cities were first being electrified after Westinghouse’s AC beat out Edison’s DC, electricity was proving to be so easily and cheaply generated, the various power companies turned to finding new uses for this power e.g. refrigerators, fans, washing machines…

    There were plans underway for many power companies to just give away electricity in return for hook up fees knowing the users would turn to these new conveniences and run that bill up.

    In stepped government to make sure that this new and valuable resource would be “fairly administered” And that was that.

    Do you know, as Kevin pointed out, we are essentially using the exact same methods for generation and transmission that were being used 100 years ago? Sure, our motors et. al. are now far more efficient but it’s still the same damn thing.

    Why? Well here in CO our PUC has guaranteed ExCel something like an 8% ROI. That’s right, GUARANTEED. So if their supplier raises their cost, they apply for a rate increase(and get it) They have absolutely no incentive to streamline their operation. They have no incentive to find cheaper ways to transmit our power. They have no incentive to find cheaper supplies.

    Even worse, when we have harebrained mandates like 20% of all energy generated by 2020 must be a renewable, THEY COULD CARE LESS. They know whatever it costs, the costs will be passed on to us.

    Pile on the ridiculous standards the EPA is setting forcing numerous coal plants here to close and electricity is going through the roof.

    And wouldn’t you know it, I use electricity to melt glass and baby, that ain’t cheap.

    REgressivism truly is stupidly evil.

    Sorry, the last time I ran my business, it was about 11 years ago, I did NOT ever get a DIME of help from the government. HELL, those arseholes defaulted on my student loans while I was unemployed. OOOPS, they broke the contract. Remember, you are allowed a deferment if you are unemployed, in the military or in the peace corpsesssssss. Anyway, funny how the communists use the communist excuses but they are NOT COMMUNISTS damn it!

    OKay, I have taken a time out for the last 4 years, staying under the radar. Here is the deal, if the communists retain power, I am going back to work, under the radar. If Romney wins, depending on what he does in the first month, I may go back to work……….legitimately or illegitimately. Hell, if you think I am going to trust these losers, you are frelling crazy.
