The Illegal Flip

Home - by - August 3, 2012 - 23:59 America/New_York - 22 Comments

The Korbut flip is now banned, but at the time it set the gymnastic world on fire. True confession- I had a huge crush on Olga Korbut at the time.

She was amazing. And at that time, I like every little girl was in gymnastics and tried to emulate her.

Only I swear I was 5’9″ then, no grace, no coordination. No hope. Only little girl dreams.

And for me, that was all good.

During that time, I was the “all around” on the High school gymnastics team. Olga was a Goddess!

Most of my pain and way old injuries are the result of gymnastics.

If you don’t try, what do you gain?

Let’s see… You’re more skilled and innovative by far than anyone in the competetion… Let’s make your techniniques illegal so that less skilled and unimaginative competitors will have a chance in the future. Sound familiar?

Oh my, you know your old when you remember watching this live!!!Thank you for sharing, I had forgotten about it. I was 14 at the time, but you know, I recall no mention of the Israel team murders during the games. I was not aware of it until 76 or so. I am not sure if I was just young and not in tune with the news at that age, the games were on in my house all the time. Was it mentioned during broadcast of the games? does anyone recall?..So sad to think what went on.

Sheryl, it was most definitely reported at the time. They even suspended the games for an entire day. Here’s a video of Chris Schenkel and Jim McKay, ABC’s two lead sportscasters delivering the news of the Israeli deaths

Even though Olga was my age, I didn’t have a thing for her; too pixiesh for me. I dug her older teammate, Ludmilla Toureshiva. She definitely had that smoking hot “Tatar from the Steppes” thing goin’ on

And when she did her balance beam routine I can still remember jumping up and yelling, “Yeah, straddle that bar, baby!”

And I also recall how my dad reacted by saying, “Get the hell out of my living room!” But then again, Dad was a hardcore anti-communist to the end

I used to look forward to the Olympics because, no matter what else was going on in the world, you could always count on a couple of weeks of head-to-head, apolitical competition among individuals. Then the O’s dropped their ban on commercial sponsorship and every skier jumped out of their skis in record time in order to frame their faces with K2 or Head at the bottom of the run. Never mind that they may have just shattered a world record or maybe their own tail bone. Then the O’s lifted the ban on pro atheletes competing and we got various “Dream Teams”. It was a lot more fun and soul-inspiring to watch Jamaica’s bobsled team. They were the very spirit of determination and brought out the best in their both their competitors and their audience.

Meant to add: I’ve never heard so much polticizing of the O Games as I have this year. I couldn’t watch/listen to much of the opening because the talking heads (NBC?) couldn’t shut up and had to make some sort of political comment about every country and athelete walking into the arena — very few comments about the athelete’s personal journey to the Olympics. I enjoyed the interview with the woman skeet shooter, though.

@AbigailAdams: I got to meet Kim Rhode in 1997, not long after she won gold in trap shooting in the Atlanta games. She was just a kid then. I got to hold her gold medal!
