My second was Van Halen’s 1984 tour. My head exploded.

I know you didn’t ask for the second show BFH but I always enjoy pointing out the discrepancy between the two gigs. =]

Well, this is embarrassing, but here goes. It was the Osmond Brothers at the Forum in Philly, with Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods as the opening act. I was 12.

That was the only time I saw either group, but the friend who went with me to the concert emailed me yesterday to say she just bought tickets to see Donny and Marie in Atlantic City. After 41 years, she’s still a fan.

My first concert was the Rolling Stones in 1981. We were right next to the stage and Mick Jagger walked within a couple of feet from where we were. I could have reached out and grabbed his leg (but I showed great restraint because I was in love with my husband and Mick Jagger was just another guy).

The BEST concert is a different matter. That was Pink Floyd.

Oops!!! I just made an embarrassing mistake. It’s just hit TMZ and X17online that Miley Cyrus got swatted. People in comments were accusing her of staging this because she’s a media whore. (I don’t care for her myself, but this isn’t about liking is disliking someone). So I posted that swatting is a real thing and that if they catch the people doing it, they should do jail time.

Welp, I thought I posted my comment on x17, and when it didn’t show up in their comments, I sent another post saying they could kiss my butt, Nobama 2012.

Turns out, I was posting at TMZ, but it didn’t post because I didn’t register and sign in (just saw the e-mail from the website).

    Boy, is my face red.

At one of the Zappa concerts another friend yelled, Eat my weenie at Zappa and Zappa answered back, Put some mustard on it. The Beach Boys.

Maybe. They were playing with the little garage amps a HS rock band would have used in a gym, but the concert was outdoors in a baseball stadium (the old Miami Marlins’). Couldn’t hear ‘em at all.

Saw The Fifth Dimension and The Temptations in the NCO club in Frankfurt. Small club setting! Marilyn McCoo was stunning from seven feet away!

Better was the second big concert: Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Opening act: The Allman Brothers (with Duane).

Sammy Davis Jr. It was around 1980 and we got free tickets to his concert at the Warwick Musical Theater in Warwick, Rhode Island. Known as “the Tent” because it started out as a tent, it was about as hokey and square as you could get. We were almost embarrased to go because he was our parents generation. But, what the hell, the tickets were free and me and my girlfriend basically used it as an excuse to go bar hopping afterwards.

I’ll never forget it. I had seen him countless times on TV but I had no idea what a voice he had. That man could sing. Yeah, he sang his signature stuff like Bo Jangles and Candy Man, but he sang so many other songs. And he was just such a great performer. The Tent was theater-in-the-round and the place was packed. There were about 10 of us white people there and the rest were black. Sammy had us all in the palm of his hand. He bantered with the audience between songs, he joked around with the band. He was funny and personable and came across as a naturally nice guy. And that voice. What a voice.

Pink Floyd. – Animals tour. My big sis took me for my hs graduation. Pink Floyd also became my last concert 16 years later. The day after, I was so wiped out. I was still tired 2 days later. The first concert I ever attended? I was taken to a Willie Nelson & Family show when I was six. My older brother, who was 14 at the time, was a big Willie fan, and for some reason my parents decided that it was going to be a family affair. I don’t recall if it was any good or not; all I really remember is my mom taking me to the ladies’ room, and the lines being really long.

The first concert I attended of my own choice was Pink Floyd, in 1988 (Momentary Lapse of Reason tour). I went with some high school friends and had a GREAT time.

The first concert I actually attended was Mountain opening for Sly and the Family Stone. Long Beach CA ’69. The Motown sucked, and the scroungy lowlife black audience was so hostile to anyone white that my buddies and I felt lucky to get out of there in one piece.

John Denver at the Cow Palace in 1980. Went with a friend. LOTS of hot cow-girls in tight jeans. DAMN! The music was almost like a religious experience. The crowd was very quiet in between songs, almost like a church. He started off with Starwood in Aspen. So many people were singing along but you could still hear him and the band quite clearly. It was almost as if it was understood that you were supposed to sing along, even if you couldn’t sing that well. After about 45 minutes he dismissed the band and played solo for about 20 minutes — he opened solo with Rocky Mountain High. Then the band came back and they finished. Incredible.

Springsteen at Arizona State’s Grady Gammage auditorium. Grady Gammage is not really suited for rock and roll concerts. The balcony is help up by a couple of curved metal trusses

I was in the balcony during the concert and during the finale “Devil With the Blue Dress On” we were up and stomping around and the balcony started moving up and down. And I guess everyone thought that was really cool, so we started stomping harder and the balcony REALLY started moving.

And I guess it then dawned on our collective consciousness that this could turn into a disaster so everyone stopped stomping and the balcony stopped moving. Afterwards a survey of the building revealed that the balcony support system had been damaged and could have collapsed, which would have killed dozens. Needless to say, that was the last rock concert ever held at Gammage

The concert was in the gym, and people were seated in folding chairs on the basketball floor, as well as up in the stands where I was. The college management had decreed “no dancing” but when the second set started with “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love”, the crowd just went nuts. This decked out hippy guy came dancing down the center isle and in unison, the entire crowd on the floor stood up, pushed their folding chairs aside, and started dancing. About ten college cops moved in to put down the insurrection, but after a few seconds they realized how outnumbered they were and just quietly eased back and let the dancing continue. Smart men.

Wish I could have made it to a Stevie Ray Vaughan concert. Have all his albums on CD, and a few concerts on DVD. Stevie’s brother Jimmy said that Stevie played the guitar like he was breaking out of prison. He was the first white guitarist to be accepted into the Blues Hall of Fame. I think they may have wanted him for a long concert up in heaven. Down here The Sky Is Crying.

Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind Tour, Summer 1983.

I was a junior in HS and my neighbor won free tickets in the nose bleed section of the Veterans’ Stadium in Phx.

All I remember is flash after flash of big hair catching alight due to the lighters and bottlerockets constantly going off.

I was a skate rat with a flattop.

There were a LOT of rockers sans hair at the end.

Bruce Dickenson made one plea for the medley of fire to stop. No avail. They kept playing, though.

Does watching the TAMI Show at the local movie house count?

Ok, believe it or not my dad was a motorcycle cop in the DC suburbs. He scored 2 tickets for a new group from England. It was February 1964 and I was 11 years old (yeah, I’m an old fart). I had to go with my mom and wear a tie (clip-on probably).

Washington Coliseum, February 11, 1964. I didn’t hear much through the screams. I even took pictures with my new Kodak Instamatic. If I had those pics today they’d be worth a small fortune. Old Black & White photos. Come to think of it, from what I remember, the whole evening seemed to be in black & white. Different times I guess.

I never saw that band in person again. Wonder what ever happened to them?

Ok, now make a thread on what was the BEST concert you ever attended!

Aside from any given Rush concert,
next best would have to be Pink Floyd- The Division Bell tour in ’94 at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX.

sans Roger Waters by then but still one of the best acoustically and visually.

Also caught Metallica at Cardis in Houston AFTER watching Iron Maiden and Wasp at the Summit in ’84.
    Couldn’t hear for three days!
