Energy-efficient CFL bulbs cause skin damage, say researchers

New research funded by the National Science Foundation has scientists warning consumers about the potentially harmful effects energy-saving CFL light bulbs can have on skin.
The warning comes based on a study conducted by Stony Brook University and New York State Stem Cell Science — published in the June issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology — which looked at whether and how the invisible UV rays CFL bulbs emit affect the skin.
Based on the research, scientists concluded that CFL light bulbs can be harmful to healthy skin cells.

Pope AGore the First of the Church of Environmentalism will now be selling indoor anti-UV lotion for $50 an ounce. He’ll get the gov’t to approve only his; no other can be worn indoors.

Remember how people sued the cigarette companies for their cancer whether they were a smoker or got cancer through ( if possible ) second hand smoke?
Now we can sue the government and GE! Go to your friends. Are they using CFL? Sue them for giving you cancer! Sue anyone using CFLs! Any business! Any Agency! Any person!
And if your lawyer representing you has CFLs in their office, sue the lawyer too!

Here in Kaliforkneeya the power company gives them out for free! Call them up for a free energy assessment of your home and you get a free light bulb for every lamp in your house. But they really aren’t “free”, a tax is tacked onto our power bill to pay for them. There will be a law suit coming in the near future. All the free loaders will be lining up to get their checks for damaged skin.

Well now there is a reason to wear the SPF-50 in the house and office – you know the sun blocker stuff that got stuffed down liberals’ throats – the stuff that causes wearers to become vitamin D deficient.

The real crime is what they did to my kids Easy Bake Oven.
She waited for hours for it to bake a cookie. She cryed for hours after it came out the way it went in.
They should be ashamed.

Two years ago I saw the ban on 100 watt light bulbs coming and went out and bought about 150 of them, at the time everyone thought that I was pulling their leg about the ban. Next up for banning are the 60 watt bulbs then the 40 watt bulbs. LED’s are still out of reach for most people due to the cost. And the color of the light is poor, you have to know what temperature Kelvin to pick the the right bulb to get white light. If you can avoid buying any CFL bulbs do it. Break one in your house and call for a quote from a Has-Mat contractor to clean it up, I have heard of $2000.00 bills. The things are going to be another government mess to clean up.

The light produced by some single-envelope CFL’s at distances of less than 20 cm ( 7 inches ) could lead to ultraviolet exposures approaching the current workplace limit set to protect workers from skin and retinal damage.
For those concerned about skin damage. Purchase CFL’s that look like a standard light bulb
( double envelope ) or be careful not to stand any closer than 7 inch’s to a single envelope CFL for long period’s of time. And if this is really a concern for you. You ought to think twice about going outside during the day.
Also, for those here who seem to be misinformed about the phasing out of incandescent light bulbs to CFL’s. That was decided in 2007 as a part of the bipartisan Energy Independence and Security Act.And almost all other major industrialized nations have already made the switch, or are set to do so this year.

@David–
Just because “almost all other major industrialized nations have already made the switch, or are set to do so this year” does not make me misinformed about whether or not I like these monstrosities. Or the way they were imposed upon us. Do you enjoy cleaning up after them? I don’t.
Government bureaucracy, get out of my face.
