George Costanza on Assault Weapons

Home - by - July 22, 2012 - 23:25 America/New_York - 79 Comments

(@IJasonAlexander)

I’d like to preface this long tweet by saying that my passion comes from my deepest sympathy and shared sorrow with yesterday’s victims and with the utmost respect for the people and the police/fire/medical/political forces of Aurora and all who seek to comfort and aid these victims.

This morning, I made a comment about how I do not understand people who support public ownership of assault style weapons like the AR-15 used in the Colorado massacre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

That comment, has of course, inspired a lot of feedback. There have been many tweets of agreement and sympathy but many, many more that have been challenging at the least, hostile and vitriolic at the worst.

Clearly, the angry, threatened and threatening, hostile comments are coming from gun owners and gun advocates. Despite these massacres recurring and despite the 100,000 Americans that die every year due to domestic gun violence – these people see no value to even considering some kind of control as to what kinds of weapons are put in civilian hands.

Many of them cite patriotism as their reason – true patriots support the Constitution adamantly and wholly. Constitution says citizens have the right to bear arms in order to maintain organized militias. I’m no constitutional scholar so here it is from the document itself:

As passed by the Congress:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

So the patriots are correct, gun ownership is in the constitution – if you’re in a well-regulated militia. Let’s see what no less a statesman than Alexander Hamilton had to say about a militia:

“A tolerable expertness in military movements is a business that requires time and practice. It is not a day, or even a week, that will suffice for the attainment of it. To oblige the great body of the yeomanry, and of the other classes of the citizens, to be under arms for the purpose of going through military exercises and evolutions, as often as might be necessary to acquire the degree of perfection which would entitle them to the character of a well-regulated militia, would be a real grievance to the people, and a serious public inconvenience and loss.”

Or from Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Definition of MILITIA
1
a : a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency
b : a body of citizens organized for military service
2
: the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military service

The advocates of guns who claim patriotism and the rights of the 2nd Amendment – are they in well-regulated militias? For the vast majority – the answer is no.

Then I get messages from seemingly decent and intelligent people who offer things like: @BrooklynAvi: Guns should only be banned if violent crimes committed with tomatoes means we should ban tomatoes. OR @nysportsguys1: Drunk drivers kill, should we ban fast cars?

I’m hoping that right after they hit send, they take a deep breath and realize that those arguments are completely specious. I believe tomatoes and cars have purposes other than killing. What purpose does an AR-15 serve to a sportsman that a more standard hunting rifle does not serve? Let’s see – does it fire more rounds without reload? Yes. Does it fire farther and more accurately? Yes. Does it accommodate a more lethal payload? Yes. So basically, the purpose of an assault style weapon is to kill more stuff, more fully, faster and from further away. To achieve maximum lethality. Hardly the primary purpose of tomatoes and sports cars.

Then there are the tweets from the extreme right – these are the folk who believe our government has been corrupted and stolen and that the forces of evil are at play, planning to take over this nation and these folk are going to fight back and take a stand. And any moron like me who doesn’t see it should…
a. be labeled a moron
b. shut the fuck up
c. be removed

And amazingly, I have some minor agreement with these folks. I believe there are evil forces at play in our government. But I call them corporatists. I call them absolutists. I call them the kind of ideologues from both sides, but mostly from the far right who swear allegiance to unelected officials that regardless of national need or global conditions, are never to levy a tax. That they are never to compromise or seek solutions with the other side. That are to obstruct every possible act of governance, even the ones they support or initiate. Whose political and social goal is to marginalize the other side, vilify and isolate them with the hope that they will surrender, go away or die out.

These people believe that the US government is eventually going to go street by street and enslave our citizens. Now as long as that is only happening to liberals, homosexuals and democrats – no problem. But if they try it with anyone else – it’s going to be arms-ageddon and these committed, God-fearing, brave souls will then use their military-esque arsenal to show the forces of our corrupt government whats-what. These people think they meet the definition of a “militia”. They don’t. At least not the constitutional one. And, if it should actually come to such an unthinkable reality, these people believe they would win. That’s why they have to “take our country back”. From who? From anyone who doesn’t think like them or see the world like them. They hold the only truth, everyone else is dangerous. Ever meet a terrorist that doesn’t believe that? Just asking.

Then there are the folks who write that if everyone in Colorado had a weapon, this maniac would have been stopped. Perhaps. But I do believe that the element of surprise, tear gas and head to toe kevlar protection might have given him a distinct edge. Not only that, but a crowd of people firing away in a chaotic arena without training or planning – I tend to think that scenario could produce even more victims.

Lastly, there are these well-intended realists that say that people like this evil animal would get these weapons even if we regulated them. And they may be right. But he wouldn’t have strolled down the road to Kmart and picked them up. Regulated, he would have had to go to illegal sources – sources that could possibly be traced, watched, overseen. Or he would have to go deeper online and those transactions could be monitored. “Hm, some guy in Aurora is buying guns, tons of ammo and kevlar – plus bomb-making ingredients and tear gas. Maybe we should check that out.”

But that won’t happen as long as all that activity is legal and unrestricted.

I have been reading on and off as advocates for these weapons make their excuses all day long. Guns don’t kill – people do. Well if that’s correct, I go with @BrooklynAvi, let them kill with tomatoes. Let them bring baseball bats, knives, even machetes — a mob can deal with that.

There is no excuse for the propagation of these weapons. They are not guaranteed or protected by our constitution. If they were, then we could all run out and purchase a tank, a grenade launcher, a bazooka, a SCUD missile and a nuclear warhead. We could stockpile napalm and chemical weapons and bomb-making materials in our cellars under our guise of being a militia.

These weapons are military weapons. They belong in accountable hands, controlled hands and trained hands. They should not be in the hands of private citizens to be used against police, neighborhood intruders or people who don’t agree with you. These are the weapons that maniacs acquire to wreak murder and mayhem on innocents. They are not the same as handguns to help homeowners protect themselves from intruders. They are not the same as hunting rifles or sporting rifles. These weapons are designed for harm and death on big scales.

SO WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM? WHY DO YOU NOT, AT LEAST, AGREE TO SIT WITH REASONABLE PEOPLE FROM BOTH SIDES AND ASK HARD QUESTIONS AND LOOK AT HARD STATISTICS AND POSSIBLY MAKE SOME COMPROMISES FOR THE GREATER GOOD? SO THAT MOTHERS AND FATHERS AND CHILDREN ARE NOT SLAUGHTERED QUITE SO EASILY BY THESE MONSTERS? HOW CAN IT HURT TO STOP DEFENDING THESE THINGS AND AT LEAST CONSIDER HOW WE CAN ALL WORK TO TRY TO PREVENT ANOTHER DAY LIKE YESTERDAY?

We will not prevent every tragedy. We cannot stop every maniac. But we certainly have done ourselves no good by allowing these particular weapons to be acquired freely by just about anyone.

I’ll say it plainly – if someone wants these weapons, they intend to use them. And if they are willing to force others to “pry it from my cold, dead hand”, then they are probably planning on using them on people.

So, sorry those of you who tell me I’m an actor, or a has-been or an idiot or a commie or a liberal and that I should shut up. You can not watch my stuff, you can unfollow and you can call me all the names you like. I may even share some of them with my global audience so everyone can get a little taste of who you are.

But this is not the time for reasonable people, on both sides of this issue, to be silent. We owe it to the people whose lives were ended and ruined yesterday to insist on a real discussion and hopefully on some real action.

In conclusion, whoever you are and wherever you stand on this issue, I hope you have the joy of family with you today. Hold onto them and love them as best you can. Tell them what they mean to you. Yesterday, a whole bunch of them went to the movies and tonight their families are without them. Every day is precious. Every life is precious. Take care. Be well. Be safe. God bless.

Just what we need another “ack-tor’s” opinion.

The point of the second amendment, then and now, is self-defense. If the pioneers had had repeating rifles, they’d have used them in their militias. If they’d had automatic weapons, they have used them. When your life’s on the line you hit back with as much as you have. No one who knows what he’s talking about ever claimed that an AK47 was for sport.

I have to say that Alexander has presented a serious and passionate defense of gun control. At least he made an effort to show his sincerity. I of course disagree vehemently with his argument, and with the specifics of his data as well. There are not 100k gun-related deaths annually in US. Statistics show that murders are the lowest since the 1950′s in total numbers – and we have double the population of that period. And as mentioned above, this particular killer used weapons other than the AR-15. But at least he gave his opponents the courtesy of an honest, reasoned reply. I’d like to see him debate someone who supports gun ownership – then the real truth would become apparent to those on the fence.

That was actually a pretty well stated argument, but it was just wrong.

The bottom line is that gun bans will not stop the flow of guns into the hands of criminals and “friends” of the ruling class.

The intent of the attack on the second amendment is to take guns away from those Americans who would oppose a totalitarian state.

The thugs and gangbangers who will obtain weapons illegally? Hell, they mostly kill each other, so it’s a public service for them to be armed. They’re no threat to a dictator. Armed patriots, on the other hand, represent a clear and present danger.

In response to the man’s shit talk, all I have to say is how far would those rebels in Syria have gotten if they hadn’t any arms? Assad would be chopping their heads off by the hundreds. You can believe it. I’m not in any militia, but if a revolt is in progress and I happen to pass by unarmed and see one of them go down against someone I’m not siding with, guess what? I pick up the weapon and now become an instant militia member. It’s that simple. There would have been very few revolutions in the annals of time if the bourgeoisie and peasantry had lacked the arsenal for an uprising.

Someone needs to remind these assholes, that militias were made up of armed citizens. Not citizens needing to be armed. The citizens provided their own weapons ,ammunition and rations to last a couple of days. They were never Army trained and equipped part time soldiers. In many instances, the weapons they carried, were better than what the army had. And that is why the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Jason, you have no idea what you are talking about. First, the 2nd Amendment does not mean you have to be in a militia to bear arms. The Supreme Court affirmed in District of Columbia v. Heller and in McDonald v. City of Chicago that the 2nd Amendment means that every citizen in the United States has a right to own and possess a firearm for personal protection. Sorry douchebag, you’re wrong.

Second, watch these three episodes of Penn and Teller’s Bullshit. Change the semi-colons to colons. It’s the only way I can get the URL to show without a link. I’ve already used up my two links above.

    Part 2 – http;//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TtMC1khwOs
    Part 3 – http;//www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtbvBgfI0o8

The key statement is at the very begining of Part 2. They explain the 2nd Amendment clearly.

And Jason, I can make the same arguments about how abortion kills over 1 million innocent defenseless unborn babies every year. Are you willing to do away with abortion? Bet not.

Alexander’s argument: most people are not “trained militia,” so assault rifles (however defined) must be banned.

My solution: Train people how to use assault rifles. Encourage gun owners to learn how to properly use and maintain these weapons. Promote attendance at rifle ranges for practice. In short – if you are eligible to purchase an assault rifle (old enough, not a convicted felon, and not judged insane), then training in the use of these weapons should be freely available and encouraged.

Of course, this presupposes that our government would like a trained militia – I don’t believe that they do. Citizens with training are a threat to the established order, and the more overbearing the established order becomes, the more citizens with training become a threat, thus the need to become even more overbearing, and so on.

Speaking of which, a short note on the Constitution and, in particular, the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is not designed to protect Americans from foreign enemies – it is designed to protect Americans from its own government. Once we start chipping away at freedoms and rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the easier it becomes to remove more and more rights until those Constitutional protections become meaningless.

“Or he would have to go deeper online and those transactions could be monitored. “Hm, some guy in Aurora is buying guns, tons of ammo and kevlar – plus bomb-making ingredients and tear gas. Maybe we should check that out.”

I had no idea Jason was such a proponent of the Patriot Act…in fact it appears he wants to expand the powers of the Act to spy on US citizens with absolutley no criminal history by monitoring their internet use and purchases.

Hey Jason, show me you internet history for the past year or so..what do you buy online? What do you watch online? I wanna see all your e-mails too!

and for those saying “I don’t like him, so I won’t read this”, get your heads out of the sand. Like it or not, these Hollywood leftists have money and influence on our political system. Ignoring them only makes you ignorant and them more powerful. Knowing your enemy and responding in mass is how we defeat them.

@Left Coast Dan I immediately questioned his data and am glad you took the time to refute it. More people are killed by doctors and automobiles. What happened in Aurora is tragic but an idiot like this would have found the weapons to complete his act even if guns were completely banned.

AR style rifles are not more accurate or faster than a hunting rifle of the same caliber (it depends on the ammunition and barrel length). Further, the ammunition used for hunting is far more destructive than a standard FMJ used for warfare, but either could have been used by the idiot in Aurora. Personally I like using military style rifles for deer hunting. I use an M1 for the woods (iron sights), and AR10 for hunting over fields where I might need a shot over 200 yards. My son, used to use an AR15, but only under 200 yards. I also have some bolt action rifles to hunt with, but they just aren’t as shooter friendly.

I say all actors should lose their 1st amendment rights because crazy people shouldn’t be allowed to use their words to harm law abiding citizens.I don’t care how many people die from bullet wounds, most of them are nigger criminals shooting nigger criminals.I own guns because the constitution(founding document and law of the land)says I can.Owning guns is a civil right,I don’t see how anyone can say we deserve one civil right and not another. When they disarm all the criminals that are armed illegally,I might consider getting rid of my guns, until that happens,I will probably buy more guns.George can go suck jerry seinfeld’s dick,he probably does anyway.

Decided June 26, 2008, was a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes in federal enclaves, such as self-defense within the home.

Trying to ban guns is like trying to stuff a genie back in the bottle. Come up with a better solution other than trying to stifle an American freedom.

My argument, if you are going to ban guns, then you have to ban them from every single person including police, military, government. Ain’t gonna happen.

God did not give us the right to defend ourselves, he gave us a DUTY to defend life!! It would be our duty to defend a person’s life, even if it means taking out an evil one. Where is the MSM story of the 71 year old man who fulfilled his duty in the Internet Cafe and pulled his concealed .380 and took care of business?

The man that wrote this article knows very little about one of the guns used in the theater. AR-15′s fire the same round millions of people use for small deer, wild pigs, etc, etc. As rounds go its rather low powered. Our guys in the Military would rather have a bit more power like the AK-47′s have. Had this been an AK-47 or even an M1A there would have been many more deaths. As for gun control, you cannot justify it in a free country, only in a Socialist state can it be justified. Dictators are the only ones to implement gun control. Your argument is null and void in America. We are a free country, live with it… or leave.

What a perfectly appropriate (and ironic) article by a left-wing liberal has-been, who was most best known for playing a character who was:

    -Beyond cheap.
    -Usually unemployed
-Screamed when he didn’t get his way.
-Lied pretty much every day of his life.
    -Lazy
    -Stupid
-Goes out of his way to stay on unemployment benefits.
-Disrespectful (mixed lobster in a kosher jew’s eggs)
-Overall completely unlikable and a pathetic excuse for a human being.

I love watching Seinfeld, but I can’t even begin to explain how much I HATE George Bonanza/Cantstandya. Some episodes make me want to rip his bald head off and shit down his esophagus in order to muffle his screams.

    My favorite Seinfeld moments:

-When George gets cuffed to the bed and robbed.
-When George gets beat up in the airplane toilet.
-Basicly any and all episodes where George thinks he’s going to get laid…And doesn’t.
-All eps where he gets fired, especially the ep where he screwed the housekeeper with the big ass and got busted for it.
-Any episode where George’s parents scream at him.
-When George burned his hands on the iron.

I hate that fucking guy. Now thanks to this article, I hate Jason Alexander even more.
He can now add desperate to his resume for being out of the limelight for so long.
Go away George. We don’t like you, or care what your opinion on gun control is.
Tell you what. Disarm the guards in your private neighborhood, and your local police department and we’ll talk after a few months, k?

I normally do not comment on things that I have not read entirely. But Alexander lost me three paragraphs in when he started trying to (re)interpret the 2nd Amendment!:

“Constitution says citizens have the right to bear arms in order to maintain organized militias. I’m no constitutional scholar so here it is from the document itself:

    As passed by the Congress:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Well, Mr alexander is certainly NOT a scholar of the constitution or he would know that the 2nd amendment, like th other nine in the original amendmants of ‘The Bill of Rights’, was about states rights. I.E. Rights guaranteed to be states and eaches citizens to be ‘untouchable’ bt federal law!

That’s why it says, “the right of the “PEOPLE”, not the militia or even the state! And those who suggest that state militias were replaced by state national guard, indeed. The guard answers to the federal government and therefore is not a state militia. But, I digress.

Alexander and all the rest are smart enough to get all of this. They are simply counting on the the rest of us not being that smart. Fail.
