Whoops! We live in Tampa and this was the big news yesterday. Looks like someone won’t be flying again.

So the town came out to see it take off or NOT. “Pack the popcorn honey, there may be an airline crash tonight!”

Much to do about NOTHING!
This is what this plane is capable of.
God I hate progressive mainstream ideology!!!

A modern C-17 could easily land on an aircraft carrier if it were not for the wingspan…they sometimes land at Bogue Air Field as I watch…they just hit the reverse on the engines, back down the runway and take back off…we have some awesome stuff! It may have been a mistake that they landed there, but they knew what the plane could do…

All things considered–someone is going to flying a desk…

The day before this happened this same cargo plane was in Ft. Myers at Page Field. you’d think they would have checked the sectional map of this region before flying to McDill A.F.B.

The C-17 has great short field capability, but they always PLAN AHEAD for it. This crew landed 1,000 feet down a 3,400 foot runway, expecting two more miles of concrete. They’re lucky this sumbitch isn’t in the water.

@ Chinaquapin… You better get ahold of my old instructor! I was on left base when he told me the field was short!

Just to add a little for folks who’ve never flown solo.
A typical landing “in the pattern” has 4 parts… X-wind, down-wind, left or right base, then final. You can stretch it out to 5 if you consider short final. But the fact remains… Every landing is unique, plan all you want, it ain’t happening until yo do it!

The pilot didn’t make it on his own, someone else did it for him.

Hey, why don’t we take that crew and put them in Air Force 1. Maybe they could land in Havana instead of McDill, dump all their human garbage, and save the country.

As soon as the talking heads started talking I knew this had to be CNN or NBC. Sho’ nuff it was two assholes from NBC warming up for the GOP convention. Fox would have had fun with it. NBC can’t resist the snark approach. Jerks.

Must have been empty – full aircraft are a bit harder to stop and need a little more room to take off. But not much – as someone who see’s these almost every day, I say no big deal.
Menderman & Old Oaks are correct – C-17′s are designed for STOL’s, on small, remote air strips. And they aren’t that big compared to a Galaxy C5A or a 747, 757, or 767. A little longer and fatter than a C-130, w/turbo fans.
This is nothing but the idiot media going “neener/neener, nanner/nanner, you military guys are dumb!”

Hey sport… That’s green-white for civilian and green-green-white for military.

Menderman and Roadmaster are right, of course. The idiots at Channel 8 in Tampa could have brought up the Wiki page in 2 seconds and pointed out that the C-17 was DESIGNED to operate with full load on unpaved, wet strips that were as short as 3500 ft. This was tight, and it may have been a mistake, but it just shows how hype-addicted the media is.
