I adopted a Pittie from our pound despite BSL in our state. They are wonderful, loyal, child friendly dogs… It is punk asses like Vick that give the dogs a bad rep.

I feel bad for Lenox, but pit bulls are NOT pets! Owning a pit bull as a pet is a dumb as owning a chimpanze as a pet. Sure, If you live out in the woods somewhere, and have no kids and you want one, have at it…but don’t bring one into a neighborhood! Pit bulls are bred to kill…it is that simple.

We can have the debate about Pits, another time, I have my concerns about a Pits’ potential, but they are generally great dogs.
Lennox, however, isn’t even a Pit. That’s what makes this so frustrating.
He just hit the Mutt Lottery and looks like a Pit. From what I understand the rest of the litter that Lennox was a part of doesn’t look like him at all.
So, please, keep that in my when starting a dialogue on the topic.

I don’t really like pit bulls, although to be fair I haven’t heard full-out discussions on these dogs. So I’m lacking in info. Still, I’m not terribly interested in one as a pet.

HOWEVER. Killing a dog based on his breed and nothing to do with how he has been trained and what his behavior is, is simply despicable. Not allowing him out of the city limits to go somewhere else…also, that’s cruel and ignorant in my opinion. They are so determined to kill this dog. Determined to protect people/other animals and allow pets and owners to function where the laws allow? Not so much.

The fact that authorities would kill a dog based on the appearance of being a pit bull breed is bad enough, but to not let the dog be removed out of the area to another home is outrageous.

Menderman, You are wrong. My neighbors have two pits and a little 2 year old girl that they love. They also love everyone on the street. And everyone loves the dogs. Your statement is just ignorant. Perhaps from your own experience you have disdain. But to generalize it like you do…just… no.

I was just taking video of my “Lois”. She’s a Lab/Boxer/Pit that I rescued from a shelter about 4 months ago. She brushed against the wall when I was painting the bathroom.. I didn’t notice at the time. As I sat here, looking at her, I listened to the recording. She looks very much “pit” at the right angle. As she get’s older, it shows more. (she’s 6 months old)

I can’t understand what they are doing. Going on looks? How can they legally not let the dog move away? It doesn’t make any sense.

Pit bulls may be controversial, but let’s face it. If the story is true, they are killing it for no other reason than the fact that it looks like a pit bull, no matter what the breed of the dog actually is. And last I checked, Ireland’s government is very left leaning.

Gvii, The thing about the dog is obviously pretty whacked, especially when there is a kid involved. I was gonna stay off this thread until Menderman got attacked. I think he deserves a whole lot better than that especially when you consider he had a run in with a Pit. But Pit are obviously part of this discussion.
I don’t know much about Irish politics, but what I do know is they are much friendly to business than our country is right now. Google is slowly moving there, I think Paypal corporate has already moved there, and on the way home tonight the local talk show announced Aerojet was opening an office there.

Got to side with Menderman and BadBrad on this one. Each breed of dog was bred for a specific purpose, hunting, retreiving, tracking, etc. Pitbulls were bred for fighting. Period. It is their instinct. Menderman gave a link to FACTS, i.e. the number of fatal attacks in the U.S. by pitbulls compared to other breeds. And people respond with emotion or anecdotal stories about pitbulls they know. Anyone who would allow a pitbull to cohabitate with an infant is IGNORANT!

When I lived in Dade Co. Florida, I raised 100% pit Bulls who were the MOST LOVING, people friendly, CHILD COMPATIBLE dogs I have EVER BRED. After raising 4 litters AND NOT EVER HAVING ONE INCIDENT WITH ONE HUMAN, I receive a NOTICE from DADE ANIMAL CONROL THAT I COULD NO LONGER RAISE OR KEEP THESE BEAUTIFUL SPECIMENS OF DOGS….. And here’s what you are missing and why the breed is part of this story. Whether you agree with this law or not, there’s a City official that was tasked with enforcing a law or ordinance. I have not seen any proof this dog is not a Pitt. “Said to be a cross between a Lab and an American Bull dog is not proof. And before you try and flip this around on me and come from the opposite direction, if that city official did not ask for proof or a pedigree of some sort, he would be negligent. SO if you disagree with whats happening here I would suggest efforts should have been made 2 years ago to get that law changed. And that’s where the breed gets tied back into the equation.

I didn’t spend a lot of time sifting though the different articles looking for the magic bullet. If there was some sort of proof that this dog was not a Pit I apologize. You might want to go to youtube though and search American Bulldog. Plenty of teeth snapping in them, then look at the link on my last post.

The problem is a lot of the owners of these dogs view them and train them as a weapon, and that wrecks it for everyone.

Aww That’s one cute doggy. I don’t think it looks like a pit bull all that much. Labradors are sweet natured dogs. Some pit bulls are as well.

That being said, it’s a crap shoot regarding the temperament of a pit bull. Some are interbred way too much and these tend to be the crazy ones who turn on owners and just about anyone else including other dogs. It’s always a good Idea to find one with a pedigree that clearly states who the mother is and who the sire is. I’m partial to German Shepherds (Frosteetoes) but even that breed had a bad rap for a while and so did Doberman Pinchers. Maybe it’s a good idea to dilute the blood line of some pit bulls maybe with another breed then reintroduce them back with another pit bull where at least they pick up a gentler disposition for it’s decendents. Not really sure how that works, it’s just an assumption. I’m not a dog breeder but it makes sense, to me.

All dogs are potentailly dangerous. But all terrier mixes especially so, given the fact that they were specifically bred to kill other animals.

My sister’s mini-terrier (3-4 lbs) continually tries to eviscerate my golden retriever (75 lbs)whenever they are together.,,and yet my sister will always say her jackie is just the sweetest dog.

The terrier group cannot be trusted. Put ‘em all down, I say.

Fur, the Obama ideology comment is spot on. It is the thought patterns that are being policed.

It is easy to find someone who disagrees with one guys policy of enforcement, but that someone takes that position only because he favors a different METHOD of enforcement, not just backing off from an issue that is not a governing-bodies realm.

Lennox should have been allowed to be moved. Just so you know, the City of Belfast Ireland website states:

“In the legislation, dangerous dogs are classified by type, not by breed. This means that if a dog is considered a dangerous type, and ownership is not allowed, will depend on a judgement about its characteristics, and whether they match the description of a prohibited type. ”

in other words, if it looks like a pit bull, it is illegal. The animal control guy that examined the dog said it was the most dangerous dog he had ever encountered.

This small under reported story is but a taste of further intrusions by a world government gone wild.
I consider this murder because it is a step off the edge of sanity that has set the precedent to broaden the scope of what is yours and what is not.
