Janet Evans, City Council President: typical, vacuous politician. Hope she gets voted out soon.

Hey JERK: Make your budget to fit the services, cut the services (and hence employees) to fit the budget, or quit.

Czar you got that right. Every gov’t agency should be forced by law to only offer services that can be paid for with known money. Not predicted income, hoped for lotto money, pie in the sky dream money, but money collected legally and in the bank.
    NO deficit spending allowed.
Shut gov’t down and see how many services no one misses. Then only start back up the ones that are truely needed.

Try this, Mayor. 1. Blame Bush! 2. Europe! 3. China! 4. “It was worse than we expected.” 5. “It’s only been 3 ½ years!” If none of those work, there’s always- 6. “Don’t change now, things are moving in the right direction.”

And the Mayor is a democrat. Even he sees what’s going on. The Mayor doesn’t make the budget. The city council does. Maybe he should switch parties.
…. The city union workers lawyer says how these workers Risk their Lives Daily out there. HA ! Did you see these yahoos cussing in the courtroom ? These guys work about 6 hours a day and hit the tavern about 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Oh, and I use the term Work loosely.
…. State Unions are in trouble all over the country. The Truth has gotten out after what happened in Wisconsin…. People are tired of paying these Slugs Bloated Wages.
… Hey, at least Scranton isn’t Stockton which declared Bankrupcy.

Going to minimum wage is a though nut. However I believe that all municipalities nationwide with financial difficulties should be willing to take a percentage cut to get back on their feet. It’s common sense. From mayor to janitor, take a cut. Also cut out wasteful spending like building bicycle paths, theme parks etc. Let Little Leagues police their own parks for a period, help out, cut the grass etc. Much could be done to save money. But then I am not an economist. What the Flick do I know?

If the employees don’t like it, the Mayor should tell them they have a choice:

Either take the across-the-board pay cut OR
he will immediately lay off 25% of the employees using a lottery system.
    Wouldn’t that be fair?

    So…do you feel lucky, punk?

    norman — excellent suggestion!

The local judge said this was a no-go, but the paychecks went out “light” a few hours later. The major should suggest the judge make up the difference since he seems to think cash is a never-ending commodity.

First Stockton, Ca. Now Scranton, Pa. I’m sure many, many, more to follow. It’s been said over and over again, “sooner or later, government runs out of other people’s money”. I’m just not sure why the progs can’t seem to have an understanding of this simple concept.

Still overpaid if you ask me.

I saw these people in OH during the Senate Bill 5 discussions. Firefighters, teachers and janitors all rallied against a health care co-pay and demanded that I continue to pay their co-payments and pensions after I pay for my own co-payments and added to my retirements savings.

I feel sorry for those who were sincere in their pursuit to serve citizens in the public sector. But the people making the noise are those who pursued these jobs to milk the taxpayer and take the easy way.

We don’t understand them because they are on the other side of the bell curve.

The full Democrat cycle: Raise the minimum wage -> Mismanage and bankrupt local and state governments -> Put their own on minimum wage -> Agitate -> Repeat.

Here’s what is going to happen (and believe me it has happened for many years)… because they believe they are not getting “their fair share”, there will be management condoned falsification of over time. There will also be increased theft of equipment. There will also be falsification of mileage fees as well. Then, people will be selectively chosen for targeting for prosecution based on who their political connections. Oh yeah, whistle-blowers who tell on the well connected people will suddenly become “mentally ill” and in need of treatment at the EAP. (Yes, the Laws legalize the use of the EAP to get rid of employees, they even have Management Seminars on how to do this!) Oh wait, this has been happening for years on all levels of Government.

    Local media reaction is interesting.

On the front page of the Times/Tribune online, the story that the unions are suing the mayor appears as the fifth item down, below the news about the appointment of a new president for the Yankee farm team.

WNEP Channel 16 home and news pages do not refer to it at all.
