Mass Exodus in Maryland After Tax Hike
More than 30,000 Maryland residents have fled the state to escape Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley’s heavy taxes on the rich, costing the state more than $1.5 billion in lost revenue, a new study has found.
CNBC reports:
The study, by the anti-tax group Change Maryland, says that a net 31,000 residents left the state between 2007 and 2010, the tenure of a “millionaire’s tax” pushed through by Gov. Martin O’Malley. The tax, which expired in 2010, in imposed a rate of 6.25 percent on incomes of more than $1 million a year.
The Change Maryland study found that the tax cost Maryland $1.7 billion in lost tax revenues. A county-by-county analysis by Change Maryland also found that the state’s wealthiest counties also had some of the largest population outflows.
In total, Maryland has added 24 new taxes or fees in recent years, Change Maryland says. Florida, which has no income-tax, has been a large recipient of Maryland’s exiled wealthy.

Oh yes, “Enjoy,” as the sign says. Enjoy it while it lasts–MD was an expensive place to live and a wonderful place to leave.

Coming soon… laws to forbid you to leave a state without official government permission.

And yet, they will find some BS reason why the exodus occured. That’s what you do when you’re in denial.

NoMoBo, imagine, internal passports, residency permits with special permission to move to another city.or the special American way, basically paralyzing people from moving because they know the doctor they are assigned to can’t easily be replaced in their new city, where a waiting list is what will greet them.
OK, that’s about all the grousing I can do. What i really want to say is, don’t have a second revolution without me.

Why don’t these fucking tool governors get it. The report came out about the states with republican governors whos unemployment rate dropped. These states also did not lose millionaires either.
It’s the same with businesses. If they are taxed higher and higher, they will move their business. Tennessee has been the recipient of many businesses for this reason.
Stupid liberals.

As a matter of fact, there was a futuristic novel like that:
Head Rites explores the impact of U.S. legislation that requires residents of all major urban areas to obtain residency permits in order to remain in that urban area. The story is told through the lives of three couples whose careers, relationships, dreams and happiness are dramatically altered by the head rights law. Softbound – 250 pages

I think this was the foul mouthed doucebag that appeared on CNN the evening that Walker defeated the recall attempt in Wisonsin. He was livid that the left was defeated and hinted that Walker was going to be arrested, Romney was a crook and that right wingers unfairly influenced the vote with huge influxes of outside state (and US) cash. Basically he blew a headpipe. Oh what the hell, Maryland isn’t really state anyway.

I was listening to Mark Levin yesterday. He believes O’Malley might be considering a run for POTUS in ’16 or ’20. If you think it’s laughable, just remember Klinton.

Well that just sucks. I haven’t been able to sell my house in MD for 3 years now. My real estate agent out there quit the business in June but at least he found me some renters before seeking other employment opportunities.
MD was frustrating to state to vote in. Not a snow balls chance of electing a Republican dog catcher with all the down staters auto voting for Dems. Still swam against the tide when I could, its the principle of the thing and having the privilege of saying “I didn’t vote for Obama” and “How’s that working out for you there?”

It’s not like these emigrants are changing their stripes. Just like the pine beetle, liberals destroy one locale then move on to another. Look at Colorado, the formerly wild west where men were men; now the ‘Pride’ of the Rockies. Now butch women and pasty faced ‘men’ like Governor Hickenlooper vote high taxes, slothful generations, killing babies, and anal sex.

[ I'll read the comments later, but I had to jump in ... ]
Even a one-legged millionaire could make it to the border of Maryland in under a day, hopping! I doubt too many of them would walk, or actually run, though.
The governor should have thought to secure the borders before imposing this tax.
And, is it too late for me to put up a sign on the NY border, “Welcome, Maryland’s millionaires!”? [ Everyone knows NY is a haven for those seeking lower taxes. embed /sarc on_off switches here. ]
And I just can’t understand how Maryland was unable to tax its way wealthy. (more sarc switches required.)
-Now, time to read how everyone said this better.-

Study wants to pin it all on that specific tax change.
It ignores the many other ways that MD is becoming a shithole.

@Toaster: I am a Levin listener too and heard him say that O’Malley wants to be president. God help us. Maryland can do better than this man.

@Maude — You nailed it! Most of the wealthy refugees from highly-taxed states are libs who voted for the a-holes who raised their taxes and increased spending up the wazoo!!!
They’ll move to one of the low/no tax red states and vote for the same crappy people (i.e., libs).
Eventually there will be nowhere to move to for any of us!

Nothing surprising about the exodus. People have moved out of high crime rate neighborhoods to safer neighborhoods for centuries.

shevee you are right on the money. they create a socalist eutopia in their home states then when it blows up in thier faces they move to someone elses neighborhood and screw it up there. look at california then they move to arizona, oregon, washington and do the same there. they leave the northeast move to atlanta or florida and try to make it into the high tax hellholes they left. please stay home you are not welcome.

This sign is alongside interstate 70, just west of Baltimore MD. This guy puts a new anti obama sign up every couple of months.

We’re not rich, but we got the heck out when I retired. MD is not “retirement friendly.”
MD loves the rat-people and hopefully, that’s all that’ll be left. Let the rich socialist maggots in Montgomery County pay for em.

@Jethro – How far west? I drive I-70 every day, to and from work. Haven’t spotted that sign yet. It’s awesome! Dissent is discouraged in the People’s Republic of Maryland. I’m surprised the sign poster hasn’t been arrested.

haha. this is an interesting right-wing nut job intellectual circle-jerk. its amusing to be a liberal wandering into a bizarre environment like this. anyone actually try reading the whole CNBC article? anyone that read the whole thing understand it? (rhetorical question. answer: obviously not.)
