    Welcome to the world of no interaction. Sadly my anxiety makes me love the fact we can communicate without ever leaving my home.

    Unfortunately that is abnormal. I know I am abnormal. Why does the rest of the world want to live this way.

    Reminds me of the commercial where the young lady is ragging on her parents because they don’t “Live” because they only have 11 friends on Facebook (or whatever) while they are out doing things.

    The Art of Conversation is dead. Nothing pisses me off more that having a few beers with the guys and two or three just sit there texing. When they stop texing they tell you about the great shot they had on the 4th hole. They then go back to texing. Fucked up.

    I can’t help but wonder…if there were ever an electromagnetic pulse or similar catastrophic event that took out all these gadgets, how would these antisocial robots even survive?

    I’ve seen couples literally sitting across from each other in a restaurant, and both were totally engrossed in their respective “social networking” toys. Why even go out together?

    Nothing good can come of this “trend”. Just my 2¢.

    I can’t stand the sight of folks pecking away at their little screens.

    One of the only places I don’t see much of that is Costco. Lunch time at Costco is wonderful. People share table space and everyone talks – to each other. Isn’t that grand??

    I’m going to believe that this is a class trip somewhere and the kids were instructed to look at their iphones to read about the highly educational site they were about to visit, during which they would put away their iphones and engage in illuminating conversation. Recently I had dinner with my folks, who are in their mid sixties. I swear both of them took out their iphones and started to look at them as soon as we were seated. Which resulted in me telling them to turn the stupid things off. I own the cheapest phone I could find, have no internet access, and I like it.

It is an UNsafe world out there; pay attention to your surroundings. I see 4 guys just asking to be assaulted and sent to the hospital or morgue, and 4 gals awaiting to be raped.

    My friends, you may not believe this, but I have never owned a cellphone in my life, and I don’t intend to, for reasons such as the picture here. They are robots, sheep, out of touch with reality.

    I’ve always thought the perfect Batman villain would be a guy who could interrupt all cellular/texting on the entire planet and hold them ransom. Can you imagine that? The whole world would commit suicide!

    No cellphones for me; they represent a mental leash. Call my home phone, if I’m not there, I’ll call you back when I’m good and ready to. If I’m not home, I’m not home, try me at work.

    It makes me sad to see all of you commenters so bitter about the younger generation. I didn’t realize that we were so looked down upon and that we where such idiots. I don’t know if y’all are aware or not but it was your generation that invented the cell phone. I’m sure that your parents thought you were idiots too and I’m sure you didn’t appreciate when you were young either so maybe you could lay off the younger generation for a bit fur because it’s starting to feel like the conservative realm is only for the ages 30 and up.

    this behavior is not limited to the young.
    poor social skills cut across all ages.
    but what is interesting is that people don’t engage others in a social setting without pulling out their phone. i remember when “call waiting” first came on the market. considered it rude to put one on hold to pick up another call. if you are with someone, your phone should be off. unless you hold the security of the world in your hand, there is no reason to have a phone on while out and about. 90 percent of the phone calls/texts are garbage anyway. in my youth, sans phones, i could tell you what was happening, where the party was and what restaurant was the bomb. didn’t need yelp, a facebook update or twitter. the beast is 24/7 and it wants to be fed.

    @Hannah –

    All you have to do is look at that picture – it speaks a thousand texts. Not one person is speaking to another. Maybe nobody knows anyone else in this picture – I don’t know.

    But I can tell you that when two people are sitting at a table eating a meal, it is extremely rude to take an incoming call (other than an emergency). The message to your friend at the table is, you don’t mean enough to me to wait until after our meal to speak to this other person.

    It just so happens that it is much more common with the younger generation – not exclusive mind you, just more prevelent. The sad thing is that the practice has become routinely accepted as the norm. It diminishes the value of a relationship.

    Hanna,

    age has nothing to do with self-evolution. You make your own choices for yourself, and evolve at 30 something for conservatives, or never for liberals.

    I’m not PC, I’ll tell it like it is. Most of us in here will do the same. If you want to play with the big boys you’re gonna have to put up with bloggers who don’t sugar coat what they want to say. The left doesn’t do that either, so it’s fair game.

    I have never gotten an answer that is remotely close to anything that was urgent. NEV VER.

    And Hannah, these are adults. I’m not attacking youth.

    This picture shows a new generation of dickwads.
    They aren’t going to stay young. And be careful what you take offense to, because if you’re saying that these kids won’t continue this activity when they become grown adults, you’re admitting that texting is a youthful transgression that they’ll grow out of as they mature. That’s not what you’re saying, is it?

    No that’s not what I’m saying. I’m not even saying what’s happening in the pic is okay, or that texting at the dinner table or with another friend isn’t rude. I’m just saying it’s a little obnoxious how quickly everyone assumes that the younger generation is gonna be a bunch of sheep and usefull idiots. like I said I’m sue the generation before y’all thought you were all idiots and were a bunch of dickwads because you had your records and your walk mans.

    @Hannah-

    “….it’s a little obnoxious how quickly everyone assumes that the younger generation is gonna be a bunch of sheep and usefull idiots…”

    Nobody said or implied that. While I did say that it’s more prevelent among youth, after thinking more about that comment, I realized that there a far too many older folks who do the same thing. But it has nothing to do with being a sheep or a useful idiot.

    It’s a behavioral issue that, in addition to being rude when done in a “couples” setting (i.e., a date), it also borders on becoming a new addiction – which crosses all age groups.

    It is NOT about technology per se. We are not Luddites.
    In fact, we embrace technology, or we wouldn’t be here, would we?

    We know you are not a typical “young person”, because you seem to have good values and are a “Conservative”.
    But it’s a fact that in 2008 Obama captured two-thirds of the “under 30″ vote!
    Does that make them sheep?

    If it was still 1973 I would be still in the Navy. One question for those of us over 50+ yrs. of age, how the Hell did we survive rotary dial phones that were all owned by Ma Bell? And for that matter pocket calculators, I saw my 1st Texas Instrument calculator in the spring of 1972 and it cost over $100. Before that in HS we used slide rules, remember those. And no cable just the 3 networks and PBS, no PC’s or laptop computers, internet or E-mail. Music was still played on LP’s or 45′s, or worse 8 track tapes, no CD’s or satellite radio. Better in some ways because we actually talked to one another and wrote letters when stamps were $.08., of course minimum wage was $1.65 an hr. and I made all of $250 a month when I joined the Navy 40yrs. ago in 1972. The worst part of the 70′s was the shitty cars ie Pinto’s, Vega’s, Gremlin’s and other POS cars courtesy of govt. regulations ( thanks to Nixon and the EPA) and the 1st Arab Oil embargo in the fall of 73 when gas jumped to maybe 50-60 cents a gallon from 30+ cents per gal. We were probably zombies back then as well mainly because of drugs but at least we weren’t all marching in lockstep texting one another every friggin aspect of our lives. And I will never learn to text but I can still write a pretty darn good letter if I want to.
