As if this bunch needed reminding, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for posting that clip.

I have it on my country iPod along with 382 other American songs representing the value that this country is, was and WILL BE AGAIN.

The original 1918 Irving Berlin lyrics contained the line,
“Stand beside her and guide her/ To the right with a light from above.”

I actually prefer that and sing it whenever I get the chance.

In my younger days I thought Kate Smith and this song was hopelessly square. Boy, was I wrong and the song and Kate Smith’s singing of it has grown on me the older I get.

ACCORDING TO THE STORY I HEARD KATE TELL:

THE SONG WAS THROWN OUT OF THAT EARLIER IRVING BERLIN SHOW.

AND DECADES LATER, KATE CALLED UP IRVING AND ASKED HIM IF HE HAD A GOOD PATRIOTIC SONG FOR HER SHOW; SHE FELT THE NATION NEEDED IT.

IRVING SAID HE MIGHT, OPENED HIS TRUNK, RIFLED THROUGH A FEW HUNDRED OLD ONES THAT HAD GONE NO WHERE, AND PULLED OUT “GOD BLESS AMERICA”.

    AMAZING.

AMAZING TO THINK IT HAD LAIN IN THAT TRUNK FOR DECADES – UNKNOWN, UNSUNG.

    GOD BLESS AMERICA.

She remains one of my favorites and it always brings a tear to my eye to hear her do justice to that song. Thank you so much. Better days are around the corner and happy 4th to all, be safe.

@reliapundit — really don’t think there were “decades” involved between Kate Smith and Irving Berlin.

Now my comment related to the song:

My dad enlisted in the Marines during WWII, giving up all his dreams, knowing that he would be drafted into the Army but wanted to be better.

Hollywood supported our country and it’s war efforts. Clarke Gable, Ronald Reagan, Carole Lombard, Glenn Miller, etc., all were willing to give their all for the sake of America.

Today? Nobody in Hollywood is willing to support our American Exceptionalism — Pitt, Clooney, Moore, etc. are more concerened with their bottom line than they are with the condition of our country.

Piss on the Hollywood of today.

Major Kudos to the Hollywood of yesterday.

Give me Kate Smith and “God Bless America” over any crap dished out today from Hollywood.

@acer, yes I remember those days very well.

I always thought it was so cool. I mean, Kate wasn’t somebody you’d associate with sports, let alone hockey. And vice versa.
Damn. Those were the good old days.

    Happy Birthday, America!

There have been few times in America’s history more profoundly momentous and more potentially hazardous than the election of 2012 when we choose the man who will lead our great country into 2017.

Actually, that choice is relatively simple.

Do we as a nation decide on November 6th to re-elect Barack Hussein Obama and suffer through four more years of a left wing extremist who has proven himself to be a dangerously incompetent head of state devoid of leadership abilities and love for the United States and our values, a president who has undermined America’s national security and national pride and confidence?

Or do we put aside petty misgivings and differences and elect Governor Mitt Romney, a man who has proven he can lead, who has shown he is much better qualified to guide us out of Obama’s economic cesspool and international quagmires and, perhaps most importantly, believes in his country and our future.

For now, though, we should put politics aside and celebrate America’s birthday! . .
