Dallas NAACP Wants Texas Lottery Shut Down
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas chapter of the NAACP wants to stop seeing low income Texans pumping money into the state lottery by putting it out of business.
In poorer communities, though, the lottery seems to offer the chance at a life otherwise out of reach.
A study paid for by the Texas Lottery Commission says the people most likely to play Pick 3 are those making $20,000 a year or less –– below the poverty line. And people who are unemployed are more likely to buy scratch-off tickets than those who have jobs or retirees, the study found
David Anderson collects disability but still spends a few dollars a week testing his luck. “It’s up to me, spend this five dollars or should I go buy a loaf of bread and hamburger to feed the kids,’ he said.
But why stop something that’s raking in the money? So far in 2012 Texans have spent more than $3.3 billion in lottery tickets.
“They have this delusion that they’re going to win,” said chapter president Dr. Juanita Wallace. “I want them to shut it down,” she said. “Our people are spending their little money, their life savings away in hopes of winning.” The group voted recently to urge state officials to do away with the lottery.

There is no thought that the people who are creating the problem could, on their own, stop doing self-destructive things.
Typical mindset: “There’s a problem in our community with what our people are doing. Somebody else has to act to keep them from doing these things.” Essentially, the NAACP is saying that their individual community members have no ability to regulate their own behavior, and as such, there should be no expectation on the part of others that they do so. Somebody else has to act to regulate their behavior.
Why doesn’t the NAACP use their resources to teach people self-control. That would pay dividends beyond the lottery.

The most idiotic action a person can take is to buy scratch offs or go to a casino and pump coins into a slot machine, or worse use a credit card to gamble.

It was pointed out to me recently that the reason why so many immigrant groups succeed in America is that their members help each other out. Like these Korean immigrants:

I play the New York Lottery by mail. I play X amount of games for one year and send them a check. I’ve been doing it for 15 years. I once won $1500. But I am not a winner. I’ll stick with it though. If I ever hit big I’ll let you know. I’ll take IOTW folk out to dinner.

I can remember when all gambling was against the law in Michigan. Now we have a host of lottery games and a casino on every corner. I can’t see that we are more prosperous for it. The Motor City Casino in Detroit is the most stark contrast. It’s a gleaming jewel in the middle of a crumbling neighborhood, but the parking garage is full every weekend.
When pot is fully legalized, look for State governments to award themselves a monopoly on sales.
Then comes prostitution…

Why do Liberals/Lefties/Commies ALWAYS think govt can LEGISLATE moral values on the populace?? You cannot. This stupid proposal would never fly. All the targeted blacks would drive to where the tickets can be sold. The NAACP and any other black group does not have the legal standing to outlaw something to deny their people and others what they want.
