Adorable 85 Year-Old Congressman Politely Informed “Teabagger” Has Alternate Meaning
Among the many revelations in Robert Draper’s new book, Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives, about the wave of GOP freshman elected to the House in 2010, is this little gem:
Being a liberal Democrat, Rep. John Dingell of Michigan was no fan of all the new Tea Party members hanging around Congress – or ”teabaggers,” as he referred to them. However, being 85 years old, Rep. John Dingell was completely unaware that the term “teabagger” had another meaning. And his staffers just let him go on like this, talking about teabagging wherever he went like an embarrassing uncle, until Dingell was booked on The Daily Show. That’s when his chief of staff decided it was time to step in and finally have that awkward conversation with him about how kids these days are using the term to describe something other than hysterical conservatism. But it’s Dingell’s reaction upon learning the other meaning of “teabagging” that earns him the new title, John Dingell (D – Awesomeland):
[T]he Congressman went through three different stages of reaction. At first, he said “hah,” then said “that’s disgusting,” and finally the octogenarian congressman reached the plain of acceptance and said, “It’s funny and I’m going to keep using it.”
