China’s Fingerprints Are All Over Us and In Us

Oceanaris-

Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar, made some very provocative statements to Smithsonian Magazine that were released today. He is deeply concerned that computer viruses such as the Stuxnet used against the Iranian nuclear program can be planted in electronics equipment manufactured in China. To quote from the interview and make my point, it is a lengthy quote.

“Clarke claims, for instance, that the manufacturer of the F-35, our next-generation fighter-bomber, has been penetrated and F-35 details stolen. And don’t get him started on our supply chain of chips, routers and hardware we import from Chinese and other foreign suppliers and what may be implanted in them—“logic bombs,” trapdoors and “Trojan horses,” all ready to be activated on command so we won’t know what hit us. Or what’s already hitting us.

“My greatest fear,” Clarke says, “is that, rather than having a cyber-Pearl Harbor event, we will instead have this death of a thousand cuts. Where we lose our competitiveness by having all of our research and development stolen by the Chinese. And we never really see the single event that makes us do something about it. That it’s always just below our pain threshold. That company after company in the United States spends millions, hundreds of millions, in some cases billions of dollars on R&D and that information goes free to China….After a while you can’t compete.”

We don’t import anything from China for our military. They are not a DFAR approved trading pardner. (How ever I’m sure the current admin would like to change that) What is happening is Chinese chips and electronic equipment are being smuggled into the U.S. supply chain. I have been receiving e-mail enquiries for the last 6 months questioning if we purchase any electronics from specific vendors. It’s a huge problem and has several programs all but stopped. Luckily we just make machined parts.

So the ChiComs could start a war with Taiwan, we’d have to come to their aid, they press a button and all of our planes fall from the sky because everything shuts down.

    Battlestar Galactica, anyone?

Interesting story but I guess he failed to mention that it’s more probable that the Chinese were allowed to steal hardware/software that already had logic bombs or something similar built in. I’m not a big government person but let’s not presume that the defense agencies aren’t aware and actively combating this. Hell, after the fall of the Soviet Union every western spy agency had a field day stripping the Russians of damn near every military secret they had. I suspect that if a cyberwar breaks and some guy in Peking presses the “button” that the wheels fall off the sandwich trolly beside him. This isn’t meaning to say the Chinese are harmless just not to elevate them to the size of giants.

That czar accurately depicted whats been happening in the commercial markets for a long time. But, that’s not how the military side of things work. WHen you deliver product to the military that material need to be certified up the wazoo. Raw material, country of origin, dimensional and performance criteria needs to be documented. I’m not saying some of what he says is not taking place, but not near the magnitude he is describing. I do this shit for a living and he is not accurately portraying that market.
