New York Times Teaches You How to Buy Separate (but equal) Gifts!

Home - by Lori Ziganto - December 9, 2009 - 16:30 UTC - 27 Comments

Good news! The New York Times, being so much Smarter Than Us, has come out with a gift buying guide to instruct us on how to be Post-Racial and buy separate, but equal, gifts for our friends.  What a way to embrace diversity!

I would have never realized that my non-whitey, non-cracker friends are actually strange, different creatures who obviously couldn’t possibly like the same things that I like. Apparently, their gift preferences are based solely on their oh-so-mystical skin colors! Thankfully, the New York Times is there to save the day and to save me from the embarrassment of handing out the “wrong kind” of cookies. Glynnis MacNicol, of Mediaite asks the following:

What I would like to know is who thought this was a good idea? In this year’s NYT’s Annual Holiday Gift Guide there is a section devoted to “Of Color | Stylish Gifts.” From the intro to the section.

Somali fashion, do-it-yourself henna kits, children’s books that draw inspiration from the lives of Barack Obama and Sonia Sotomayor: it’s not hard to find gifts created for and by people of color this holiday season. Here are some possibilities.

I had to read that twice. Because really New York Times? NYTPicker, who was the first to note the addition thinks there’s no other word for it but racist. I’m not sure I’m willing to go that far. But badly, terribly thought out, bordering on offensive, absolutely.

Well, unlike MacNichol, I would go that far: it IS racist. The real kind, not the Harry Reid made-up kind. It’s also a very thinly veiled attempt at foisting Obama into the mix of absolutely everything. Dudes, we are tired of him. Even people who like him are sick of his big mug everywhere. Oh! Mugs! Is there a “special” kind I should buy for my black friends? What about my Hispanic ones? Or my gay friends? And here I thought the only thing that I shouldn’t ever give anyone is a fruitcake. Well, except for the neighbor who I don’t like down the street.

According to this guide, the only thing I should see about my non-white friends is their color — and that is all they should see as well. Every suggested gift has “mocha” or “black” in the title, as if people define themselves, and their tastes, by their skin pigment density alone. Once again, it is the left who sees only color. It is the left who insists on putting people in little boxes and keeping them separated – and NOT equal.

Sorry, New York Times, but most people who live outside Ivory Towers (racist!) define themselves simply:

As people.

Well, I’m certainly glad they told me this cuz, I never know what to buy for my black friends. Or my gay ones, or my liberal ones…oh wait I don’t have any of those….guess that makes me intolerant. :)

So I guess the “Michael Jackson Skin Lightening Kit” is not a good gift to give my black friends?

And I suppose the “Mechelle Hair Straightening Kit” is out of the question too.

What’s a person not of color to do?

You should have mentioned the title of the Obama book. Are you folks ready for this

“Barrack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope”

And then this neutral non-partisan comment

“Why get your kids yet another video game when you can (retch inducing phrase in 3 ..2…1) open their minds”

And kudos to Matt for that parenthetical commenting device — it works

Most Republicans were mostly post-Racial after Abraham Lincoln (a Republican) signed the emancipation proclamation that ended slavery.

Many more followed suit in the 60s with Martin Luther King’s (also a registered Republican) civil rights movement.

Its always been the Democrats that have hurt the blacks the most. 100 years have progressive policies have given us Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia which actually were shining cities on a hill 100 years ago. The one time member of the KKK, Democrat Senator Robert Byrd is still in the Senate! Revisionist history taught in today’s schools is getting unbearable.

Democrats lie to gain power. They are full of false promises and Bovine Scat.

Thanks NY Times! Without your guidance, I might have given out KFC gift certificates. What a bunch of jerks. Now tell me, should I send them a Christmas card or a Kwanzaa card?

Seen on Hillbuzz (Dec 9, 2009):

“Dr. Utopia has the lowest approval rating of any president at this point in his presidency in the history of these surveys. He is ranked lower than CARTER right now.”

No Matthew, don’t DO IT! You know what they say — Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. Didn’t you see the part where I said “kudos to Matt?”

That’s like saying “Praise be to Matt” or “All glory and honor is yours, oh Matt” If I were an Arab I might have said “Al humdu li Matt”

Don’t take me wrong big fella

Well, now we know what gifts are appropriate for “people of color”… but the article stops there.

What if we are unfortunate enough to actually know a few white people? And, God forbid, we like them enough to buy them a gift (even though they’re white)?

Should we just buy all of them matching Confederate flags and call it a day?
