Just found out that grandbaby #2, who is due to be born in March, has a severe heart defect and also suffers from Down Syndrome. If the baby is fortunate to live more than six weeks, he/she will endure a multitude of surgeries and hopefully, someday receive a heart transplant.

My first thought when the kids told us this news was, “Thank God it’s not 2014! My grandbaby has a chance to survive!”

Grandma – They say that special children are born to special parents, and Down Syndrome babies bring a certain joy. No matter what happens, I know you will experience joy with this child. None of us know the bend in the road that is ahead, but we are to keep the faith at all times. This baby is already loved and prayed for.

It’s heartwrenching, SGM. I honor and respect your childrens’ attitude and perspective. God gives grace to us according to our need…No one can understand the love parents have for special needs children until that child comes into the world and needs that love. It’s tragic that the policy of our national government should add to their anxiety at the moment.

Becca and Elektra, thank you for your prayers. I am not one who prays; I figure God knows my mind and doesn’t appreciate having everything repeated. The Man Upstairs will see to it that happiness surrounds this baby, the grateful parents and grandparents, and brings smiles to our family. God is love. Six weeks of love is better than none at all…isn’t it, MonkeyPig?

I like both Shooter and MonkeyPig. They both leave great comments. And I’m not trying to be a fence sitter, it’s the truth.
As this community gets tighter eruptions may break out, but let’s not take it personal, let’s use it as a springboard to express ideas and to learn. MonkeyPig’s view is a valid one, except that I don’t think the gene pool will be “polluted” by a child expected to only live 6 weeks. But miracles do happen.
I’ll leave you with this, and it’s a true story. Mr. Pinko will verify it if anyone doubts the veracity.
When I was born I had a defect that wasn’t detected until I was 3 months old. By the time it was detected the doctors counseled my parents to give me up to the state because I was thought to be too brain-damaged already and would only continue to get worse. They said they should weigh the fact that they “weren’t so attached to me yet” against the life they would lead with a “problem child who was deaf, dumb and blind.”
My parents didn’t give up on me and found a leading doctor in the field that corrected any “continuing damage.”
Without any wise-ass comments from the peanut gallery, turns out I wasn’t permanently brain damaged( okay, debatable.)
I’m not trying to give you false hope, Shooter, and I’m not a religious man, but I think I’m sorta proof that some prognosis’ are not entirely set in stone.

Thank you for your words, BFH. I too was given a prognosis for my only son of blindness, loss of limbs, Down Syndrome, etc, back in the day when ultrasounds and amnioscentsis were not in use. Due to massive x-rays on my abdomen (at 8 weeks of pregnancy) when I was experiencing chronic stomach aches and the doctors were CONVINCED I could never get pregnant, they later presented me with their dire predictions for their misdiagnosis. My son was born – perfect, intelligent, and beautiful. He was a leader in both high school and college sports and academia, graduated college with an engineering degree, and now leads his profession in electrical and mechanical automotive design. All of this from a fetus the doctors were trying to convince me to abort.

So I have a kindred spirit out there.
I’m a little unsure of Wyatt’s comment now. I detect a bit of disbelief, probably because I was intentionally vague about my condition and Wyatt seems to be in the biz somewhat, so my story probably sounds implausible.
I guess it wouldn’t harm any to talk specifically.
I was born with craniosynostosis. Something that is routinely checked for now, but not when I was born. Around 2 months old my condition led to seizures that were explained away by various general practitioners as more benign than it turned out to be. By the time I was accurately diagnosed the inside of my skull was pressing on my brain to such an extent I wasn’t even responding to the foot reflex that occurs when you drag a solid object over the sole of the foot. (The toe curling.) I was said to be severely brain damaged. I had a radical procedure that was, at that time, not done at all. I was operated on in an amphitheater in front of surgeons from all around the country. They removed my skull and made artificial fissures that would act as man-made fontanels to allow my skull to expand naturally. During the operation they lost some of the skull to fragmentation and improvised by putting a teflon strip across the top of my skull. Their thinking was that my skull would eventually overgrow and close the fissure. To this day I still have the teflon strip beneath my skull, and the skull nearly fused. I still have a quarter-sized fontanel, just like a baby. But I’m still somewhat protected by the teflon.
So, yes. it’s a true story, and many doctors, except for a few mavericks, told my parents to give up on me.
Somehow I knew you’d understand, shooter.

    I’ve talked too much.

You can never talk too much about situations that involve devotion, love, and the power of God’s influence on our medical society. I commend your parents for never giving up. I applaud your physicians for their knowledge and courage. And most of all, I give glory to God for giving you a stubborn soul and mind that brings us the best of political commentary, humor and thought every day! My God will see to it that my new grandchild fulfills a need in all of us in this family, whether it is for 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 years, or 5 decades. Thank you, everyone – even you – MonkeyPig, for your prayers, thoughts, opinions, memories, and advice. I only hope that, for no matter how long this baby lives, he (she?) knows every day how much in love I am with him.

In the meantime, and getting back to subject, just how many of us will feel this fortunate when obamacare sets in???? God has His power, but so does the government!

@ Big Fur Hat and Shootersgrandma… Mancakes was not expected to ‘be a productive member of society’ according to ‘experts’ at his elementary school. Thank goodness his mother and father refused to believe it. It was even suggested that they put him in an institution. Today, he may not be able to do math, but he is one of the smartest people I know. He is a successful artist and a fantastic husband and father.

Keep the FAITH. With it, the child may or may not exceed all expectations, without it, the child certainly will be doomed.
