I love the photo of the unsuspecting kids in the window and the lion (or whatever it is) coming around the corner!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Great pictures from a less complicated and troubled time. Thanks!
That’s The Pink Panther cowgirl. Now I’m feelin as old as I am, but that too shall pass.

It’s interesting that the parade was originally called “Macy’s Christmas Parade”
The balloons were released into the sky at the end of the parade, where they floated freely for a couple of days. When they finally burst or floated down, you would get a gift from Macy’s if you brought a piece of the balloons to the store.
Er…uh…my…parents told me that.

Great pics! I always thought Bullwinkle was a 60s creation. Maybe mid 50s.

Great photos. I was trying to date them as well and according to wiki (at least this entry shouldn’t be tarted up) says that the first Rocky and Friends show debuted in 1959.
Have a great Thanksgiving.

Great show your thoughtfulness and effort is
well appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving

I can date one of the pictures (the one with the hippo) at 1940. On the theater marquee it’s showing Charlie Chaplin in “The Great Dictator”…Seems a little ironic considering our predicament doesn’t it?

See the Hotel Astor shot. Those cops on the right
are rookies. Still in the Acadamy. Grey uniforms.
Ahh memories.

Sylvia. I remember that. I found a piece of Mickey
Mouse at Orchard beach. 1958.
I’m just kidding. My aunt told me that years ago.

Wonderfully nostalgic! Even on the holiday I’m visiting IOTW and you’ve provided a much appreciated reminder of my childhood and a much simpler time!
Thanks!

DevilDoc…. wondered how long it would be before someone picked up on that. Also liked spiced beef and wieners and beans. Were you a corpsman? A1/9 3rd.Mar.Div. RVN 68-69.

E2/5 1st Mar.Div. RVN68-69. It was Marines in the “New Corps” the put the Devil in front of the Doc. I have a good friend who was Doc at A1/9. But that was before Viet Nam (before the “Walking Dead”). Semper Fi!

Wonderful pictures. I esp. liked the one of Uncle Sam standing tall. New York City at this time of year was always magical, even to a kid from the ‘burbs.

I was watching a show on the History Channel. They said back in the 30′s they would let the ballons go at the end of the parade.

My great uncle Frank Cooper invented the rubberized material that Goodyear used to make the first Macy’s balloons in 1927. That could have even been him in the photo of Mickey Mouse.

What year was this?
I’m sorry but that is an insult to Ogres. Shrek is a thoughtful intelligent adult ogre, who abdicated his claim to the throne for the good of the people and for his family. To have him portrayed as this mindless troll of a power-hungry dimwit Galoomphy is just inaccurate and anti-ogrmitic. Greyson’s cameo in the first Harry Potter in the girls bathroom would have been a more accurate representation.

That Obumbles turkey is hilarious! I might have to print that out and use it as my placemat at dinner (all my family members are liberal Democrats, I’m the sane one).

I think heart felt gratitude stands on three legs. Humility – giving thanks is an act that humbles. Compassion – the need and want of others moves us to personal action. And love – holding our family close and knowing you can count on each other. Feel the day…Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m anticipating that the Chicago parade will see the rollout of a giant inflated “Squeezy the Pension Python” this year, all done up in Illini orange.
If so, expect sepuku.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Can’t believe it’s been a year since I’ve seen these pics. Awesome.
Captain America just made the first blunder – dropped a 12-pack of bottled beer. We saved 6 – oh, well. Just another laugh.
Wishing you all well.
