A passerby saw what was happening and feared for the woman’s safety, Snell said.
The passerby, 61, of Arlington, had a pistol. He fired a shot in the air.

I like these stories. But firing a shot into the air could possibly kill an innocent person when that bullet falls back to earth. Why not just plug the bastard in the leg and tell him that’s the only warning shot he’s gonna get.

No real good choice here.
Shooting a moving target, with a hand gun, under life-and-death circumstance/pressure, has a low a probability of success and a high one for hitting something you shouldn’t.
There are no completely safe ways to fire a warning shot. Sh!t can and usually does happen.
