We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterwards.-Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Sometime during the difficult winter of 1917-18, when the Bolsheviks were imposing their dictatorship on a country that had barely tasted freedom, a group of Russian intellectuals met at the home of A.M. Kalmykova, a socialist who in the 1890′s had been active in educational work. The guests had connections in various European countries. The hostess asked the assembled company to appeal to Europe in the name of the Russian intelligentsia that the Bolsheviki were not representatives of the working class, but impostors and demagogues, who exploited base instincts. Two or three of those present said something. Then V. Figner spoke up. Lowering her eyelids, she began by saying that there was no point in turning to Europe with a complaint against ourselves. That which was occurring in Russia was the work of our own hands, because we have taught, we have preached precisely that which the Bolsheviks and the masses that follow them are now doing. well, I bought Atlas Shrugged and forced myself to read it. I gained many valuable insights doing so.

I reckon its about time I buy another long book by another Russian and force myself to read it. “Gulag Archipelago” here I come! (but I’ll bet the limpwristed fascist fops at Barnes & igNoble have the book buried and inaccessible)
