We almost got a preview of this last Friday in Chelyabinsk. If that meteor had come straight down instead of expending all of its energy in the upper atmosphere, Chelyabinsk would not exist today.
What’s scary is that this near-strike happened while the scientific community was laser-focused on a smaller asteroid that was passing near the earth. Nobody saw this one coming, and it was over before anyone on the ground even realized what had just happened.

The one that blew up in Russia was something like one eighth the mass of the one that was being watched. Not the other way around.
