WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is exhorting a Florida minister to “listen to those better angels” and call off his plan to engage in a Quran-burning protest this weekend.

Obama told ABC’s “Good Morning America” in an interview aired Thursday that he hopes the Rev. Terry Jones of Florida listens to the pleas of people who have asked him to call off the plan. The president called it a “stunt.”

“If he’s listening, I hope he understands that what he’s proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans,” Obama said. “That this country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance.”

“And as a very practical matter, I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women who are in uniform,” the president added.

Said Obama: “Look, this is a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaida. You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan and Afghanistan.” The president also said Jones’ plan, if carried out, could serve as an incentive for terrorist-minded individuals “to blow themselves up” to kill others.

“I hope he listens to those better angels and understands that this is a destructive act that he’s engaging in,” the president said of Jones.

Whole story here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100909/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_quran_burning_obama_plea

Hey Obama, how many “stunts” did you pull when you were a “Community Organizer”? – Mr. Pinko

From Powerline

As Scott noted this morning, Feisal Abdul Rauf has taken to the opinion pages of the New York Times to reiterate his intent to build the Ground Zero mosque. Rauf is no stranger to those pages. On February 27, 1979, the Times published Rauf’s letter to the editor in which he criticized America for failing to apologize to Iran for past misdeeds. Rauf added that “the revolution in Iran was inspired by the very principles of individual rights and freedom that Americans ardently believe in.”

When it reported on this letter, the Wall Street Journal, trying to be fair to Rauf, wrote that at the time of his letter, “Iran’s revolution hadn’t revealed all of its violent, messianic character.” But a closer analysis of the timing of Rauf’s letter undercuts this excuse and casts the imam in a worse light than the Journal supposes.

For, as Barry Rubin, has pointed out, Rauf’s public cheering of the revolution came just weeks after the Ayatollah Khomeini returned triumphantly to Iran. To be precise, the Ayatollah returned on February 1, 1979. Welcomed back by a crowd of several million, he immediately became the undisputed leader of the revolution. On the very day of his return, Khomeini appointed a new prime minister, Mehdi Bazargan, and told his followers it was their duty to God to obey him. Here are his words:

I hereby pronounce Bazargan as the Ruler, and since I have appointed him, he must be obeyed. The nation must obey him. This is not an ordinary government. It is a government based on the sharia. Opposing this government means opposing the sharia of Islam … Revolt against God’s government is a revolt against God. Revolt against God is blasphemy.

Rubin is thus correct in observing that Rauf’s expression of support came at the precise moment when the revolution’s extremism had become clear. Read in this context, Rauf “wasn’t endorsing the overthrow of the shah or the emergence of democracy but the triumph of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and everything that entailed.”

The distinction here, as Rubin has also said, is like the difference between extolling the Russian Revolution while Kerensky was in power and endorsing it after Lenin had taken over. Rauf wasn’t moved to defend the Iranian Revolution in the pages of the Times until its Lenin was in control.

To be sure, Rauf’s letter in praise of Khomeini’s revolution was written more than 30 years ago. But even today, he will not say, as he might have, that while he endorsed the Iranian revolution at first, he has come to realize that it is far too extreme and repressive, and that he does not favor an Islamist theocratic form of government. Instead he stands by what he wrote in 1979, claiming that the letter expresses his longstanding and ongoing concern for the humane treatment of Iran. But anyone concerned about humane treatment of Iranians would long ago have denounced Khomeini and his successors.

Therefore, let us not be under any illusions as to whose side Rauf is on, or what the real meaning of the Ground Zero Mosque is. Rauf may be urbane, but he is not moderate. One cannot be both an apologist for Iran’s theocratic regime and a proponent of interfaith understanding.

Time magazine asks, what happened to Obama’s Army, Organizing For America? I told you what happened. Obama was a pet rock. Millions voted for Obama that never voted before, and will never vote again. Voting is so, yesterday.

David Plouffe

From Time:

What happened to Barack Obama’s once vaunted political machine? The outfit that put upwards of 8 million volunteers on the street in 2008 — known as Organizing for America — is a ghost of its former self. Its staff has shrunk from 6,000 to 300, and its donors are depressed: receipts are a fraction of what they were in 2008. Virtually no one in politics believes it will turn many contests this fall. “There’s no chance that OFA is going to have the slightest impact on the midterms,” says Charlie Cook, who tracks congressional races.

Neglect is to blame. After Obama was elected, his political aides ignored the army he had created until it eventually disappeared. No one was in charge; decisions were often deferred but rarely made. By the time they realized they needed more troops, says longtime consultant Joe Trippi, “their supporters had taken a vacation from politics.”

So earlier this year, when the White House gave OFA a whopping $30 million — more than half of the party’s entire budget for 2010 — senior Democrats suspected a hidden agenda. Several tell Time that OFA boss David Plouffe, who ran Obama’s 2008 campaign, is using the cash to rebuild an army for 2012 under the cover of boosting turnout in 2010. OFA is putting staff into such states as Virginia, North Carolina and Arizona, which have few close statewide races this fall but which are all prime targets in an Obama re-election campaign. “This is totally about 2012,” Cook says.

Plouffe denies the charge. “I couldn’t object more strongly,” he says. Plouffe notes that OFA volunteers knocked on 200,000 doors in late August — an impressive number, but only a tenth of what it could do in 2008.

Not even sorcery may be able to rekindle the excitement many first-time voters showed back then. “The popularity of the President with these voters is not a transferable asset,” says Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist. “I don’t think it’s realistic that they would ever be able to replicate the unbridled enthusiasm. It’s like a first kiss: you can never experience it twice.”

Fidel has finally confirmed what we, capitalists, have been saying for decades. Communism and socialism is a failure.

There is no debate. The leader of the communist paradise has said ‘it doesn’t work.” What friggin more do you need? And I’m looking straight at you, Mr. Community Organizer.

AP HAVANA – Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba’s communist economic model doesn’t work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago.

The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel’s brother Raul, the country’s president, has said the same thing repeatedly. But the blunt assessment by the father of Cuba’s 1959 revolution is sure to raise eyebrows.

Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba has clung to its communist system.

The state controls well over 90 percent of the economy, paying workers salaries of about $20 a month in return for free health care and education, and nearly free transportation and housing. At least a portion of every citizen’s food needs are sold to them through ration books at heavily subsidized prices.

President Raul Castro and others have instituted a series of limited economic reforms, and have warned Cubans that they need to start working harder and expecting less from the government. But the president has also made it clear he has no desire to depart from Cuba’s socialist system or embrace capitalism.

Of course he won’t. Neither will our dipshit one-termer.

Can’t we all just award a thug millions of dollars and then marry them?

Radar Online -

Rodney King, the victim of a 1991 beating by Los Angeles police that sparked race riots, is marrying one of the jurors who awarded him a multi-million dollar settlement, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

King, 44, recently proposed to Cynthia Kelley – juror number five – who pushed to award King a $3.8 million payout in a civil case against the city of Los Angeles.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: Candid Shots Of Rodney King

“She is a godsend, a blessing in my life,” King told RadarOnline.com.

“I don’t know what I would have done without her in my life… I can’t wait to make her my wife!”

Nineteen years ago, King was chased by police through the San Fernando Valley and was captured on videotape being beaten by four white officers.

Their acquittal at a criminal trial in April, 1992, sparked a notorious race riot that last for four days, leaving 55 dead and more than 2,000 injured.

For the first time, the lovebirds are revealing their on-and-off again secret romance and detailing how it blossomed almost as soon as the controversial civil trial ended.

At the time, both Kelley and King were married; they both later divorced.

“Our first date was the next day after the trial when Rodney’s lawyer and Rodney met me in a local pizzeria in Newport Beach,” revealed Kelley.

But the pair separated during King’s stay on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew and didn’t reunite until four months ago, when he telephoned to ask if his former flame was still single.

“We hadn’t spoken to each other for many years, and it just so happened that we reconnected,” Kelley told us.

“It was like we were never apart from one another.”

In our exclusive interview from the Los Angeles home that the couple now share, Kelley – who was the only black juror in the case – admitted she kept their relationship secret, until now, to avoid media unwanted attention.

“During deliberations, the other jurors said, ‘Let’s just award him $100,000, you know he’s just gonna blow it anyway’,” Kelley said.

“It was a blessing that I was even there, the other jurors didn’t want to give him anything.”

King, famous for asking, “Can’t we all just get along?”, told RadarOnline.com the couple is yet to set a date for their nuptials.

My position on the Koran burning in Florida by a whacko church aligned with the vile anti-military, anti-semitic Westboro Church that defiles the funerals of our honored fallen soldiers:

1. This church’s plan to burn the Qur’an does a grave disservice to the cause of spreading awareness about Islamic teachings and the threat that Sharia poses to our way of life.

2. The burning of books is wrong in principle: the antidote to bad speech is not censorship or book-burning, but more speech. Open discussion. Give-and-take. And the truth will out. There is no justification for burning books.

3. If Americans are free and not under Sharia, then the church can do this if it wants, and their freedom and rights should be protected. Islamic supremacists should not be allowed a victory for their violent intimidation — if these people want to burn a book, they’re free to do so.

4. If they were burning a Bible, no one would be threatening violence against them.

5. Petraeus is wrong to say this will threaten American troops. This is based on the assumption that they are fighting us because we are doing things they don’t like. Actually they are fighting us because of imperatives within the Islamic faith. They will never like us unless we convert to Islam or submit to Islamic rule. If we stop doing things they dislike, where will we draw the line? How far will Sharia advance in the U.S., with Americans afraid to stop its advance for fear of offending Muslims and stirring them up to violence? The Muslim Students Association is already pushing for halal cafeterias, segregated dorms, segregated gym facilities on campus. This is incompatible with American freedom. We have to draw the line.

Tonight Eric Bolling had me on with the two of the named co-conspirators in the largest Hamas funding trial in American history, Safaa Zarzour, Secretary General of the Muslim Brotherhood front The Islamic Society of North America, and Hussam Ayloush of the Muslim Brotherhood front CAIR-Los Angeles.

Joining these bandits were Bolling’s panel guests with Mark Levine, Joey Jackson, Jack Burman and Curtis Sliwa.

Hussam Ayloush, a delightful fellow with whom Robert Spencer has had several pleasant exchanges, here says that mosques and the Qur’an are off limits to the FBI.

In other words, despite incidents such as this, and this, and this, and despite the fact that hatred and Islamic supremacism are taught in a number of mosques in the U.S., he wants law enforcement officials to turn a blind eye to the possibility of jihadist activity in mosques. And meanwhile, he also wants to take the Qur’an off the table — that is, he wants no investigation of the stated motives and goals of the jihad terrorists themselves. Apparently he would prefer that we remain in the dark about them.

Which side is he on again?

6. Although I oppose this venture, this is another challenge to the U.S. to stand up for free speech and free expression. Popular speech needs no protection. As such all Americans should support the right of the church to proceed, even if they dislike what they’re doing.

From Greg Gutfeld

THE ASTOUNDING BRAVERY IN CONDEMNING THE WACKY PASTOR

The Vatican calls it “outrageous.” Hillary called it “disgraceful.” Erik Holder smeared it as “idiotic.” And the NYPD called it “dangerous.”

No, those strong words are not about my new mesh thong ( I’m only giving the people what they want). And they aren’t reactions to the mosque built near Ground Zero. They are responses to the putrid pastor’s plans to burn the Quran this Saturday, Sept 11th.

And I agree with all of them. The dude, Rev Terry Jones, is an attention seeking sack of poop who’s accomplished everything he wanted: He put his morbidly mustachioed face all over the map – and embarrassed everyone from Gainesville, Florida. I’ve been trying to do that for years.

But in a weird way, this handle-barred hooligan has taught us a few lessons:

-that mostly everyone agrees the pastor can burn the book, but he’s a big weenie if he does it. This was exactly my argument over the construction of the mosque. So in a weird way, this guy may have clued in others who missed that subtle point: The mosque can be built, but a compromise (or a conversation about it) might have been nice. Don’t get me wrong: the Koran burning is pure provocation, and I’m not sure that’s entirely the case with the mosque. But both issues deal with poor judgment. The key distinction: the pastor is a total barfpuck.

-second, America’s reaction to this idiot should be a blueprint for all Muslims, when one of their religious jackasses act up. There was no delay in smacking this fuzz-faced freak around, and frankly I’d like to see more of that from Muslims, whenever one of their extremists rears its ugly head.

-And, I’d also like to see that from our own government. I mean, it doesn’t take much bravery to take down a stereotypical wackjob like Jones. However, going after PC-protected knuckleheads takes more stones. But that may be asking too much.

And if you disagree with me, lets party, you racist homophobe..

Guest post by Jim Hlavac, publisher of The Daily Mush. It is a provocative and thoughtful piece, and Jim looks forward to what we all expect to be a lively debate.

* “The big thing is to make this country, along with every other country in the world with a few exceptions, quit discriminating against people just because they’re gay. You don’t have to agree with it, but they have a constitutional right to be gay. And that’s what brings me into it.” – Barry Goldwater

” Mr. Conservative [Goldwater] has found himself an unlikely new career: as a gay rights activist. While that’s not his sole pursuit – he returned to Capitol Hill yesterday to testify in favor of scenic overflights of the Grand Canyon – in recent years he’s championed homosexuals serving in the military and has worked locally to stop businesses in Phoenix from hiring [and firing] on the basis of sexual orientation.”

You may not like this, but it wasn’t a “Left” turn – it was a Don’t Tread On Me moment – for gay people. It was a turn to Liberty & Justice for All. The Declaration of Independence says “all men are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights…” Straight people seem to want the phrase to be slightly altered for gay people: “… among them are life, liberty OR the pursuit of happiness.” You wanted to deny us even the 1st Amendment right to meet to discuss the issue of our repression and seek to redress our grievances. In the 1950s a handful or two of gay men and woman in Chicago formed a group called “the Friends of Dorothy” to see about achieving our Constitutional Rights. When the police and FBI got wind of it, they searched high and low for Dorothy, to stop the menace. A million bucks, endless hours, for more than a year – it was positively Obama-like – to find Dorothy. Well, if you all have to ask who she is, we’re not telling.

Finally Goldwater said what we asked for – full constitutional rights to be gay. Virtually no one knows he said it. (Psst, spread the word.) He spoke while Bowers v Hardwick was still the law of the land. This was a Supreme Court case handed down on July 1st, 1986, that basically said that all laws against gay people of any kind in any jurisdiction were perfectly constitutional because gay people were … they didn’t quite say what we were. But they said what we weren’t – we were not allowed simple exercise of Constitutional rights like to have a beer in a bar of our choice, given liquor licenses and legal as such, without fear of the police coming in and raiding the place. But Goldwater spoke 25 years after the Big Gay Event. It was only in 2003 that the Supreme Court ruled, 5 – 4, in Lawrence v. Texas, that virtually no laws against gay people were Constitutional. Um, but, except, military, marriage and a few other minor things. This is the last hurdle, I suppose. That four justices would still deny gay folks our rights is bizarre to us. We don’t care if you hate us, just don’t tread on us, and we’ll go live our own lives in our own ways. Still, you already seem to be fairly oblivious to our presence unless we tell. What do you think that guy handing out peanuts on Flight 45 to Chicago is? He’s a friend of Dorothy, almost certainly. Ditto the guy who’s doing your wife’s hair and drapes. The church organists are mostly gay, too, and they play well, no? Though let me reassure you, we have no more idea as to why we’re gay than you do, but we know we are from the moment we first had the inklings of puberty, just like when you discovered the opposite sex.

So what is all this about gay rights? No special rights for gays, right? Isn’t that the motto of our nation? And the sweet part is, for you folks, straight people get to decide what may or may not be a right for a gay American to exercise, and where he or she might do so. Since gay people are a teensy tiny part of the nation, perhaps, what, 10,000,000, 15,000,000 to 25,000,000, we can never get the votes to pass laws for us, we rely on you (and the occasional riot.) And no one knows how many, no one counts. You couldn’t come up with a count that was real if you tried. Please don’t try, it’ll make us both nervous. Yet this tiny number, which is oddly a constant percentage in every culture on earth since time immemorial (that’s why you can selectively quote ancient Scripture against us,) is a cause of great fear to you. And we’re not even invited into the councils where such decisions are made, lest we influence by “promoting homosexuality.” What a slogan we have: “Young man, join us, be hated and scorned for the rest of your life, and live at the mercy of the breeders.” Oh yes, what a great promotion for gayness that you think we’re doing. You seem to be quite fearful of it. But really, let my people go. Don’t tread on us.

The Big Gay Event, the thing which led to all this ruckus over the past 40 years is the thing gay Americans celebrate in June. It’s the purpose of all those parades that are never reported on TV, radio or in the newspapers, because you know, the leftist press is all in league with the “homosexual lobby” to do something to America. We can’t figure out what you’re talking about. Especially since not a one of you could come up with the name of a gay “leader” on par with say, Jesse or Sarah, Newt or Sharpton. There is no gay spokesperson for this nefarious gay lobby seeking the destruction of the Republic by making everyone gay or something. We’re very TEA Party in that regard. No leader, no organization. We just sort of go door to door, picking up the sons (mostly) and daughters who you throw out as so much garbage while accusing us of being anti-family. Again, we really don’t, we gay people, know what on earth you’re talking about, so we muddle through.

Anyway, the ruckus, yes, back then, on a hot June night in 1969. The hippies were in wild abandon everywhere. We gays were hidden, as you requested we do. We went to our bars, in our neighborhood, which we owned and rented our homes in, and ran stores and businesses and professional practices and paid taxes and bought the newspapers and watched TV just like all Americans. Though we were hidden. But cops kept coming into these bars, and arresting everyone, and pulling them out into the street, and taking their picture, and later, the next day perhaps, calling their jobs, their families, their landlords, trying as best you could to destroy lives and men. The newspapers aided and abetted this jolly old time by publishing the pictures, names, addresses, work places of the arrested. You know, to discourage the others, I suppose. Well, to coin a phrase: “How’s that working out for ya?”

You see, that night, the day after Judy Garland died, the cops raided, as they did regularly, the Stonewall Inn. Next time you’re in New York go see that bit of Americans fighting for rights tenaciously. Anyway, the cops began to bust heads. And they dragged the “queers” and “faggots” and “nancies” out into the street. And something magical happened. Those guys said, no, Don’t Tread On Me. Leave Us Alone. Go Away. And the Riots started. Real live riots, like on TV. With burning cop cars, and cops on the run and beaten. Cops barricade in the bar set afire by the queers screaming Don’t Tread On Us! A dozen cops sent to the hospital. Reinforcements called in. The angry T-party (you think teabagger is a bad word, wait till you find out what a T-party was. Ah, history; and irony.) gay folks came out of the houses they owned and paid taxes on and said – Leave Them Alone. Yes, fags by the hundreds, thousands even, came out of the places where we went to hide but which you came into and caused grief. Something about Constitutional rights it was. Oh yes, we didn’t have any, and you weren’t going to put up with any hope and change in that.

For three days and nights the most scorned minority on earth said Don’t Tread On Me. Magically, the gay bar raids stopped. In 1970 the world’s first gay march took place in our neighborhood, the one we escaped to, but even there you wouldn’t leave us alone. Until we knocked a few cop’s heads together. So you came repeatedly to pick on the sissies, just as you still want to do. And we said no, don’t tread on us. You all come late to the party, my fellow Americans. We’ve been fighting government oppression of the sort you can’t imagine. And now, all over the world, even in Baghdad I’m sure, are Gay Pride Marches. Don’t Tread On Us in a thousand languages, by the same tiny minority, what, 5 or 6%, that exists over there. We can teach you about fighting oppressive regimes. You ought to try to organize a gay pride march in Teheran, we did.

So bad was it, this hate of us, and still is, as you’ll observe shortly in the comments section, where I urge your full blast assault on the …. fill in your favorite word, spare not the rod on me. I heard “sodimizer” just the other day, hurled with a psychopathic malice. Quite amazing. Perhaps he’ll be topped here. I of course turned the other cheek, and as even the meek and scorned of this earth are to do by the command of Jesus, and said, “well, yes, I’ve heard that before. Thank you for your opinion.” Then I went and helped the economy by buying something and paid some taxes so my government can fund the lawyers to draw the line in the sand here now, against the power of gay rights. We crazy, you tell us so, remember?

Yes, Don’t Tread On Us. Had you left us alone in Greenwich Village, we might still be hidden. But no, you had to come and try to bust some heads. But really now, you’ve all got to get a grip. Some tiny percentage of the population is not going to wreck the place. You’ve all done a fine job by yourselves with unwed mothers, abandoned babies, divorces, child abuse, wife abuse, abortion, and Lord knows what else. Hell, even the guys who gave us Sadism and Masochism were breeders. Oh yah, that’s what we call you. Breeders. Cute, isn’t it? We don’t breed, this bothers you, you’ll have to figure that out for yourselves. We’re just happy as can be. Why, we even got ourselves a National Gay Rodeo Association. Family fun for everyone, truly.

Meanwhile, over in San Francisco is this crazy hetero women named Nancy Pelosi. And from what I gather Republicans, TEA Party and Conservative people all over this land want to get rid of her. It just so happens, because you chased us into the corner over there, we make up about 1/3 of her constituents. And thus, and alas perhaps, you’ll need our help to get rid of her. Bummers, eh? Unintended consequences. Still, it’s your lucky day, sort of. Because the people you most revile in the world are the original T-party people. Folks so intent on freedom that we were willing to riot for a few days to stop the treading. Pelosi treads on you. So go ask the gays in her district for help in voting her out. Put your collective heads together and figure out a way to get a small group of people who love liberty (that’s us gay people) join the larger forces who love liberty (that’s you people) and get rid of the Pelosi, and Barney Frank, and the rest of the scoundrels. In fact, why don’t you just listen to Barry Goldwater and give us our Constitutional Rights. Like to Freedom of Religion. And mine says I have the moral right to get married. And if my marriage is somehow a threat to yours, than yours is not on the Rock of God, but on some fragile sands. If scorning 5 or 6% of the population is the foundation of civilization, then we’re all in a lot more trouble than we realized. – Jim Hlavac
